“A lush mystery-within-a-coming-of-age-tale-within-a-Southern-Gothic.” —NPR Books “A richly textured portrait of small-town dysfunction and murder . . . Secrets abound, imaginations run wild.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Welcome to Spencerville, Virginia, 1977. Eight-year-old Rocky worships his older brother, Paul. Sixteen and full of rebel cool, Paul spends his days cruising in his Chevy Nova blasting Neil Young, cigarette dangling from his lips, arm slung around his beautiful, troubled girlfriend. Paul is happy to have his younger brother as his sidekick. Then one day, in an act of vengeance against their father, Paul picks up Rocky from school and nearly abandons him in the woods. Afterward, Paul disappears. Seven years later, Rocky is a teenager himself. He hasn’t forgotten being abandoned by his boyhood hero, but he’s getting over it, with the help of the wealthy neighbors’ daughter, ten years his senior, who has taken him as her lover. Unbeknownst to both of them, their affair will set in motion a course of events that rains catastrophe on both their families. After a mysterious double murder brings terror and suspicion to their small town, Rocky and his family must reckon with the past and find out how much forgiveness their hearts can hold.

Many Christians today struggle with guilt feelings and hurts that bring bitterness and anger to their hearts. Therapists say these individuals need to go back into their past and work through the pain. Biblical solutions, says Bulkley, are far superior because they promise true freedom, genuine inner peace and a fresh beginning.

We are coming into dire catastrophe through our turning aside from inter-relatedness. Reality is relational, but our present way of being in the world is an adversarial going against others (our politics) and a displacement of our innate desire for relatedness into a grasping for ever more things (our economics). We now know, if most continue on our present way, we humans will become extinct within a few decades, Our main problem is our self-contradictory identity; we are each simultaneously material-relational, but, for the most part, we humans choose to act as if we are each merely a separate object self. It is only when a crtical mass of individuals, each forgetting the self, lives her own true nature as a unique expression of Relatedness, that each and all will be saved. As Vergil tells Dante, there is "another road", love, the "direct way that is lost". The first step on the "direct way' is to forget the idea of a separate self, which allows room for a participation in inter-cultural difference with the "other", so that we see what is ours as alien and what was alien as ours. Then we can engage in an economics based on mutually beneficial relating and a truly democratic politics arising from the practice of listening-dialogue.

Writing for Harper's and the New Yorker over the last decade, David Samuels has penned a disillusioned love song to the often amusing and sometimes fatal American habit of self-delusion, reporting from a landscape peopled by salesmen, dreamers, radical environmentalists, suburban hip-hop stars, demolition experts, aging baseball legends, billionaire crackpots, and dog track bettors whose heartbreaking failures and occasional successes are illuminated by flashes of anger and humor. Including profiles of Pacific Northwest radicals and Nevada nuclear test site workers alongside coverage of Pentagon press conferences and the Super Bowl in Detroit, Only Love Can Break Your Heart proves Samuels to be a wonderful inheritor of the great journalistic tradition established by Gay Talese, Tom Wolfe, and Joan Didion in the 1960s. This first collection of his painstakingly reported and wildly inventive writing reveals the full spectrum of his talents, as well as an unusual sensitivity to both the tragic and comic dissonances bubbling up from the gap between the American promise of endless nirvana and the lives of ordinary citizens who struggle to live out their dreams.
