ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW'S 10 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR A major book about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. This time around, the cataclysm is us. In The Sixth Extinction, two-time winner of the National Magazine Award and New Yorker writer Elizabeth Kolbert draws on the work of scores of researchers in half a dozen disciplines, accompanying many of them into the field: geologists who study deep ocean cores, botanists who follow the tree line as it climbs up the Andes, marine biologists who dive off the Great Barrier Reef. She introduces us to a dozen species, some already gone, others facing extinction, including the Panamian golden frog, staghorn coral, the great auk, and the Sumatran rhino. Through these stories, Kolbert provides a moving account of the disappearances occurring all around us and traces the evolution of extinction as concept, from its first articulation by Georges Cuvier in revolutionary Paris up through the present day. The sixth extinction is likely to be mankind's most lasting legacy; as Kolbert observes, it compels us to rethink the fundamental question of what it means to be human.

This symposium, originally founded in 2013 by Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universidad de Zaragoza and University of Yamaguchi, is conceived as an international forum for the dissemination and reinforcement of research collaboration among the participating institutions. Different institutions have been invited to participate in subsequent editions. University of Cantabria had the opportunity to participate in the 2nd and 5th edition, and we are honoured to organize the present 6th conference, that unfortunately, was forced to be celebrated remotely due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This edition continues with the topics discussed in the previous symposium. Scientific topics are aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and aimed at the study of key-enabling technologies and processes to ensure a sustainable industry for the society of the future. As a novelty in this edition, the symposium will consist of two events that will take place in parallel: · Live online scientific seminars given by reputed experts in the field of Chemical Engineering and related complementary scientific areas. · Students workshop aimed at the dissemination of the research activities of PhD and MS candidates. A special seminar session has been included, devoted to the dissemination of research goals and collaborative outcomes of the X-MEM project (5th EIG-Concert Japan joint call on «Porous structured materials»), with a partnership composed of researchers from University of Cantabria (Spain), University of Yamaguchi (Japan), Atilim University (Turkey), Ege University (Turkey), Hacettepe University (Turkey) and Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry (Poland).

Dark matter remains one of the central mysteries in modern physics, although modern astronomical observations and particle physics experiments are providing vital clues in uncovering its true nature. The Dark2007 Conference brought together world-leading researchers in both astrophysics and particle physics, providing them with an opportunity to present their latest results and engage in discussion on their meaning and future direction. This book is important in its field, as it provides a vital snapshot of the seemingly disparate areas of dark matter research and provides an overview of current ideas and future directions.

Fake books—anthologies of songs notated in a musical shorthand—have been used by countless pop and jazz musicians in both professional and amateur settings for more than half a century. The Story of Fake Books: Bootlegging Songs to Musicians traces the entertaining and previously unknown account of the origins of pop song fake books, which evolved through the bootlegging of a now obscure musical subscription service, the Tune-Dex. The book follows the history of fake books through their increased popularity among musicians to their prosecution by the government and the music industry, resulting in America's first full-blown federal trial for criminal copyright infringement. Through accounts given by jazz musicians Steve Swallow and Pat Metheny, The Story of Fake Books also reveals the definitive history of the most popular fake book, one that has acquired a legendary status among jazz musicians: an anthology of jazz tunes called The Real Book. Drawing from information in FBI files, entertainment trade papers, and federal court records, author Barry Kernfeld presents pioneering research, which brings together aspects of pop music history and copyright law to disclose this predecessor of current-day battles over pop song piracy.
