"Called the ""Reader's Digest of New England Archaeology,"" by experts in the field, this book covers all finds and sits by amateur and professional ancient artifact hunters since America was first settled. Hundreds of messages were cut into stone by unknown ancient settlers. Carved faces, well-made homes of rock, Celtic ritual sites, dolmens, and other ancient remnants are scattered throughout the New England states, making it quite apparent that visitors from other lands lived here hundreds of years before Columbus discovered America. Ancient coins, weapons, lamps, containers and art objects have been uncovered as well -- all well documented and described, with photos in this fascinating book."

Alice Morse Earle (1851-1911) was an American historian and author from Worcester, Massachusetts, who wrote a number of books on Colonial America (and especially the New England region) such as Curious Punishments of Bygone Days (1874). In 1874, she married Henry Earle of New York, changing her name from Mary Alice Morse to Alice Morse Earle. Her writings, beginning in 1890, focused on small sociological details rather than grand details, and thus are invaluable for modern sociologists. A near drowing in 1909 off the coast of Nantucket during an abortive trip to Egypt weakened her health sufficiently that she died two years later, in Hempstead, Long Island. Her works include: The Sabbath in Puritan New England (1891), China Collecting in America (1892), Costumes and Fashions in Old New England (1893), Early Prose and Verse (1893), Colonial Dames and Good Wives (1895), Margaret Winthrop (1896) and Two Centuries of Costume in America 1620-1820 (1903).

From the hour when the Puritan baby opened his eyes in bleak New England he had a Spartan struggle for life. In summer-time he fared comparatively well, but in winter the ill-heated houses of the colonists gave to him a most chilling and benumbing welcome. Within the great open fireplace, when fairly scorched in the face by the glowing flames of the roaring wood fire, he might be bathed and dressed, and he might be cuddled and nursed in warmth and comfort; but all his baby hours could not be spent in the ingleside, and were he carried four feet away from the chimney on a raw winter's day he found in his new home a temperature that would make a modern infant scream with indignant discomfort, or lie stupefied with cold.

"Ships and whimsies-in-bottles, the skillful and fanciful representations of untrained sailor craftsmen, many of whom sailed from our New England shores, have been growing in popularity among folk art collectors and maritime museum attendees. The recognition of the works of marine folk artists has sprung from an appreciation for individualism and the artistic depiction of basic idealism. The common lack of technical mastery found compensation in freedom of expression, simplicity, honesty and inventiveness. The sailor artisan used the technical skills needed to perform or survive at sea into works of beauty within a na√Øve design. This has been preserved as finely crafted folk art, and in some ways a form of industrial art. This form of sailors'Äô folk art is a collection of extraordinary pieces, which often leave the viewer with the vexing question, ""How did they do such work, many times under the grueling conditions of a voyage at sea?"" It is the intent of the author to acquaint the reader with the beauty and breadth of these works, as well as to their history and references in literature."
