Excerpt from Old and New in the Countryside These papers, written at widely different times, describe some varying stages of life in the countryside during the last forty years. The first two chapters belong to the end of the nineteenth century; 'The Age of Morris Dancing' to the transition period which succeeded it, when a stirring of the social consciousness resulted in a variety of more or less superficial attempts to reconstitute rural life without that corresponding revolution in the social and economic sphere which alone could substantiate them. 'The Country-town' refers to the period which immediately preceded the War, and still in greater or less degree survives it. The changes which that universal catastrophe is bound to produce are not yet to be determined; but that, for better or for worse, they herald the end of an epoch - the 'Passing of the Old Order' - can no longer be open to dispute.
