These traits must have a negative impact on the personal and social aspects of an individual's life to be classified as a personality disorder. Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is one such disorder. OCPD is generally defined as a preoccupation with the strict compliance of rigid guidelines and rules of behavior. It affects about 1 in every 100 people and is diagnosed twice as often in males as compared to females. OCPD usually becomes noticeable in early adulthood but it may be developed starting in early childhood to late adolescence. OCPD is commonly confused with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) due to the similarities in both names and symptoms. However, there are critical differences between OCPD and OCD that distinguishes the former from the latter. For example, an OCD patient is usually aware that the symptoms of their disorder are irrational, whereas those with OCPD often do not. In fact, while an OCD patient often feels a sense of guilt for the difficulties their disorder places on their loved ones and acquaintances, the OCPD patient often sees no problem with their behavior. Rather, OCPD patients believe that other people must conform to their ideas and practices as they do things the 'correct' way. "Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is characterized by a pervasive and maladaptive pattern of excessive perfectionism, preoccupation with orderliness and details, and need for control over one's environment. It is the most common personality disorder and is associated with significant morbidity and increased health costs. Unfortunately, clinicians often do not diagnose OCPD or may incorrectly diagnose it as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Although progress has been made in understanding OCPD, many treatment providers do not know how best to address it clinically. This book examines treatment options along with developmental, psychological, and behavioral etiologies and the deeper neurobiological underpinnings of the disorder"--

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex set of thoughts and behaviors that can vary greatly from person to person and can be related to and complicated by a wide range of other disorders. Clinicians are confronted with the challenge of accurately classifying its many variants and developing effective, systematic treatments for them. Some believe that OCD and related problems should be treated as subtypes of one condition; others argue that OCD is composed of a spectrum of many similar conditions that should be treated individually. In this handbook, Jonathan S. Abramowitz, Dean McKay, and Steven Taylor present an approach to diagnosis and treatment that considers subtype and spectrum concepts. They examine specific presentations of OCD—the symptoms—that are often seen in practice as well as the many disorders that may fall within the OCD spectrum. For each symptom and putative spectrum condition, they discuss empirical support, theories of etiology, and treatment issues. The volume covers cognitive-behavioral and biological factors, as well as the latest approaches to psychological and pharmacologic therapy, including complicating factors in treatment. In concluding chapters, the authors critically address the current literature on proposed subtype and spectrum disorders, consider the clinical implications of the literature, and map out a comprehensive, integrated approach for understanding OCD and related conditions. The only work on OCD that covers treatment options for specific symptoms and the full spectrum of related disorders, this handbook is a must-have for clinicians who are dedicated to improving the lives of patients with these challenging mental conditions.

Emphasizing diagnosis, causality, and holistic treatment, this is the only book offering a full discussion of Avoidant Personality Disorder for therapists and sufferers. Avoidant Personality Disorder (AvPD) is an extremely widespread, devastating disorder that generally goes unrecognized or misrepresented by what little scientific literature there is on the topic. Therapists are left mystified about how to diagnose and treat it, and patients and other sufferers are at a loss as to what is wrong and how to go about correcting it. The Essential Guide to Overcoming Avoidant Personality Disorder is the only book available to guide both patients and those trying to help them. This thorough and much-needed volume explores the development of AvPD and presents a holistic view of its causes from the psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal perspectives. It offers an extensive section on diagnostic criteria that will be useful to sufferers and therapists, and it discusses the various therapies for AvPD. Finally, and perhaps most critically, the book provides a section intended as a guide for psychiatrists—and a self-help guide for sufferers—including a day-by-day, one-step-at-a-time, monthly guide on how to overcome AvPD.
