Excerpt from The Sovereign States: Notes of a Citizen of Virginia Among the more melancholy aspects of the genteel world we live in IS a slow decline in the enjoyment that men once found in the combat Of ideas, free and unrestrained. Competition of any sort, indeed, seems to be regarded these days, in our schools and else where, as somehow not in very good taste. Under the curious doc trines Of the Fair Trade Act, vigorous salesmanship is unfair, and retailers are enjoined against discommoding their fellows. Mr. Stevenson's criticism of the administration's foreign policy, during the last presidential campaign, was not that the policies were so very wrong: They were not bi-partisan. With a few ro bust exceptions, our writers paint in pastels; our political scholars write a sort of ruffled-sleeve, harpsichord prose. We duel with soft pillows, or with buttoned foils; our ideas have lace on them; we are importuned to steer, with moderation, down the middle of the road. These chamber music proprieties I acknowledge, simply to say, now, that the essay which follows should not be misunderstood. May it please the court, this is not a work Of history; it is a work of advocacy. The intention is not primarily to inform, but to ex hort. The aim is not to be Objective; it is to be partisan. Excerpt from The Virginia Historical Register, and Literary Note Book, Vol. 3: For the Year 1850 In continuing our work another year, we have only to say that we shall pursue the plan which we have heretofore announced, and which, we believe, our readers have generally approved. Our main object, as we have said, is to collect and diffuse useful and entertaining information relating to the History of our State, (including of course its biography, and other appendages, ) from the earliest period to the present time. Our first business, accordingly, is to gather up and give out all the partial memorials, fugitive pieces, and other writings, any where extant, that may serve to recall the "form and pressure" of the ancient Past; and we freely confess that we have a strong affection for this service. At the same time, we must say again, that we are not exactly antiquaries, (as some would have us, ) but only lovers of historic lore. We have no thought, certainly, of going out of the warm and sensible world around us, to bury ourselves amidst the rubbish of antiquity - to dote upon dust - or to muse over the mouldering bones, and other precious remains, which may still be found in the old family vault of departed Time.
