Excerpt from Noble and Heroic Deeds of Men and Women, Vol. 10 We can best learn to hate cowardice and n groveling spirit by studying their opposites. Bravery and nobility of character have been honored and respected as long as man has existed; They are the cardinal virtues of true manhood or womanhood, and always com mand respect. It is a sacred duty of every person to make his life as grand and noble as possible; and there can be no better, no surer'manner of bringing this about than by instilling into the minds of the youth such examples as are grand and noble. To build a fine, abiding and beautiful architectural structure, in which proportion and grace are blended, the first thing that is done is to build well a good sub-structure, a foundation on which torest. Just so in forming a beautiful character. The first thing necessary is to have a pure mind; before which, as an entrancing mirror, are reflected the images and casts of noble deeds, heroic actions, and 'that nobility of character which is'universally respected. The province of this volume is then seen. We are not pretentious enough to claim originality in the major ity of the facts and incidents 'found in these pages. We have only aimed at an acceptable compilation, such as is found in no other work, and which the author and publishers believe will meet a demand long felt. We have had recourse to a large number of standard and antiquated works, from which we have drawn liberally. Many of the stories have been en tirely rewritten and modernized. If it shall be the means of inspiring any youth to better and renewed exertions, or to spur any one to better efforts, the aim of the compilers will have been amply met. To do good has been the motive in presenting this to' the public, and should it fail in this it will fail utterly. The actions and deeds herein recorded are worthy of study and imitation by all. An ambition to be noble is laudable. By a knowledge of the lives of the great, we can regulate our own course and steer star-guided over life's trackless ocean. Excerpt from Makers of the World's History and Their Grand Achievements: Containing Graphic Accounts of Men and Women Whose Daring Deeds Have Given Them World-Wide Fame Comprising Heroes of Land and Sea Noble women have followed recent wars, and by their gentle minis tries have saved the life of many a poor soldier, and have comforted the dying moments of others. Florence Nightingale on the blood-stained fields of the Crimea Clara Barton, Annie E. Wheeler, daughter of General joe Wheeler, and others in our civil war and war with Spain, and the grand host of women who have performed deeds worthy of ministering angels, illumine the glowing pages of this sumptuous work. Their smile cheered the weary sufferers of the hospital and the field of carnage; they whispered words of comfort to the dying; men who had fought and bled kissed the shadows of the grand heroines as they passed. The reader follows their experiences with wonderful interest. In addition to these, the reader is charmed with the record of toils and sacrifices on the part of such moral heroines as Frances Willard and Ellen M. Stone, captured by Turkish brigands.
