The River With No Bridge (Hashi no nai kawa) explores with outspoken frankness a subject still taboo in Japan: the intolerance and bigotry faced daily by Japan’s largest minority group, the burakumin. Racially no different from other Japanese, over the centuries burakumin have been cruelly ostracized for their association with occupations considered defiling. Spanning the years 1908 to 1924, the original six volumes of this novel trace the developing awareness of burakumin of their rights and dignity as human beings. Volume 1, translated into English for the first time in 1990, is a story about childhood in a burakumin village. It tells of young Koji Hatana’s questioning of the rigid social order and his growing sense of injustice as he meets prejudice from other children at school and from his teachers who try to instill in him their belief that since he was born defiled he should resign himself to his fate. Told against the backdrop of Japan’s struggle to shed its feudalistic past and enter the modern age, the novel is a courageous work and a compelling read.

The atrocities of war take five Canadian men to the darkest, most dangerous quadrant in the world, as the American led coalition continues its fight against the war on terror. Along with the CIA, Wolf Team Foxtrot begin their assault in Afghanistan, taking fighting strategies to a new level of combat. Now a perfectly tuned Sniper/Assault Black Ops Unit, they are an elite fighting force, yet after witnessing the horrors of war, they too are in danger of suffering the same post traumatic stress disorders that they have seen from others in the past. Used by the most powerful manipulators in America, the men find themselves in different, however, just as dangerous settings of the globe. While in the underbelly of Berlin, London, Amsterdam and Yuma AZ, they must use all their skills if they are to endure the tyranny and danger that exists for each one of them. Their ultimate survival may depend on the Native Spirituality of the leader of Wolf Team Foxtrot. No Bridge Left Unburned is a powerful and disturbing story that describes the true horrors of war. Delivered with atmosphere and tension, questions are raised why politicians make the decisions to get involved in the conflict of war, and supported by citizens who give little credence to the consequences of their decisions. With an absorbing plot and compelling narrative, the author's words will spur the reader to question more, perhaps feeling the need to accept less, and therefore become involved in the dialogue that ends in decisions for conflict resulting in bloodshed.

From the author of the “full-throttle thriller” (A. J. Finn) No Exit—a riveting new psychological page-turner featuring a fierce and unforgettable heroine. Three months ago, Lena Nguyen’s estranged twin sister, Cambry, drove to a remote bridge seventy miles outside of Missoula, Montana, and jumped two hundred feet to her death. At least, that is the official police version. But Lena isn’t buying it. Now she’s come to that very bridge, driving her dead twin’s car and armed with a cassette recorder, determined to find out what really happened by interviewing the highway patrolman who allegedly discovered her sister’s body. Corporal Raymond Raycevic has agreed to meet Lena at the scene. He is sympathetic, forthright, and professional. But his story still seems a bit off. For one thing, he stopped Cambry for speeding just an hour before she supposedly leaped to her death. Then there are the sixteen attempted 911 calls from her cell phone, made in what was unfortunately a dead zone. But perhaps most troubling of all, the state trooper is referred to by name in Cambry’s final enigmatic text to her sister: Please Forgive Me. Lena will do anything to uncover the truth. But as her twin’s final hours come into focus, Lena’s search turns into a harrowing tooth-and-nail fight for her own survival—one that will test everything she thought she knew about her sister and herself...

Antiquity's Covered Bridge By: Dorine Emery Dorine Emery is an avid photographer of covered bridges. She began in her local area in New Jersey but knew the LC Beavens bridge in New Milford, Pennsylvania, was a must-see. It was Emery’s fascination with the mountain that rises to the east of Mylert Creek and the bridge she knew was there that led her to Antiquity’s Covered Bridge. History and imagination are woven like the ivy vines on a latticed bridge, facts and fiction which Emery has found on and around the Nevermore area of New Milford. Fiction based on facts, then enhanced by pseudo possibilities might describe mystery within. Not without humor—it is Nevermore who owns Antiquity’s bridge, nor without tragedy—that of Janie’s sorrow over her dear Andrew and their baby, Cheri, Antiquity’s Covered Bridge is a story to be pondered at a moderate pace.
