Not only was Edith Nesbit author of “The Railway Children” and “Five Children and IT,”which were both turned into films, but she also authored and published “The Book of Dragons” and “Nine Unlikely Tales” amongst many others (40 in total). Nesbit was considered to be "the first modern writer for children": she "helped to reverse the great tradition of children's literature inaugurated by Lewis Carroll and his contemporaries.” In “Nine Unlikely Tales” you will find nine illustrated children’s stories for 6 to 13 year olds - and for those of us “older children” who still have not yet quite grown out of visiting realms of fantasy. The stories in this volume are a mix of your standard faire of fairytales and unique, magical stories penned by E Nesbit; so they will, at first, be new to many readers. It is hard to pick a favourite from among these stories. The fairytales "Melisande", "The Prince, Two Mice, and Some Kitchen-maids", and "The Plush Usurper" are on par with Hans Christian Anderson and Brothers Grimm. But, there are other stories where the real world and the magical world interconnect enabling participants to cross over into the realm of magic and fantasy. These are equally enjoyable, like "The Cockatoucan" where a girl and her governess take the wrong "omnibus" and end up in a magical world. An Omnibus was a horse drawn bus from the Victorian era. The word Omni was dropped when the vehicles were motorised and became more numerous. But I digress…..The stories in this volume are: The Cockatoucan, Whereyouwantogoto, The Blue Mountain, The Prince, Two Mice And Some Kitchen-Maids, Melisande: Or Long And Short Division, Fortunatus Rex And Co., The Sums That Came Right, The Town In The Library In The Town In The Library and The Plush Usurper YESTERDAY'S BOOKS FOR TODAY'S CHARITIES 10% of the publisher’s profit from the sale from this book will be donated to Charities. ============= KEYWORDS/TAGS: folklore, fairy, Tales, children, stories, bedtime, fables, illustrated, myths, legends, E Nesbit, edith, railway children, five, 5 children and IT, magic, fantasy, post-victorian, storytelling, Cockatoucan, Whereyouwantogoto, Blue Mountain, Prince, Two Mice, Some Kitchen-Maids, Melisande, Long And Short Division, Fortunatus Rex, Sums That Came Right, Town In The Library, Plush Usurper

THE COCKATOUCAN OR GREAT AUNT WILLOUGHBY MATILDA'S ears were red and shiny. So were her cheeks. Her hands were red too. This was because Pridmore had washed her. It was not the usual washing, which makes you clean and comfortable, but the "thorough good wash," which makes you burn and smart till you wish you could be like the poor little savages who do not know anything, and run about bare in the sun, and only go into the water when they are hot. Matilda wished she could have been born in a savage tribe instead of at Brixton. "Little savages," she said, "don't have their ears washed thoroughly, and they don't have new dresses that are prickly in the insides round their arms, and cut them round the neck. Do they, Pridmore?"

Better known for her Psammead series following 5 children and their magnificent adventures, the popular children's books author Edith Nesbit manages to yet again capture the young minds with her "Nine Unlikely Tales for Children" novel. The novel contains 9 original stories which are set in the real world but are certainly as the name implies - unlikely. While children fiction works rely upon the already orthodox motifs such as the beautiful princess, the bad dragon and so on, Nesbit introduces some unlikely elements which have the power to surprise as well as delight. While children would certainly not be happy to hear anything related to mathematics, they would surely be delighted to learn that one of the stories is about the arithmetic fairy. There is also a story about a king who chooses to be something other than what you might expect - an appealing villa residence. There is even an automatic nagging machine to break the silence and amuse the young ones with cheerful old fun.All of these stories bring something new into the already well-established fantasy environment, while also taking advantage of the opportunity to add a moral story here and there. All of these are masterfully crafted and benefit from Nesbit's charming style.Among the nine stories is one about a Cockatoucan, which will most likely leave readers wondering what it might possibly be. "The Sums that Came Right" is yet another lovely story, as the arithmetic fairy is not going to ground anyone who doesn't have the right answers. There is even an adventurous story named "Whereyouwantogoto", as well as a classic, "The Prince, Two Mice, and Some Kitchen-Maids".Children will just love the stories written by one of the most appreciated authors of the genre. "Nine Unlikely Tales for Children" are just that, 9 unlikely tales with a likely result - good ol' fun.

Matilda wished she could have been born in a savage tribe instead of at Brixton. "Little savages," she said, "don't have their ears washed thoroughly, and they don't have new dresses that are prickly in the insides round their arms, and cut them round the neck. Do they, Pridmore?" Edith Nesbit (married name Edith Bland; 15 August 1858 - 4 May 1924) was an English author and poet; she published her books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on more than 60 books of children's literature. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a socialist organisation later affiliated to the Labour Party. Nesbit was born in 1858 at 38 Lower Kennington Lane in Kennington, Surrey (now part of Greater London), the daughter of an agricultural chemist, John Collis Nesbit, who died in March 1862, before her fourth birthday. Her sister Mary's ill health meant that the family travelled around for some years, living variously in Brighton, Buckinghamshire, France (Dieppe, Rouen, Paris, Tours, Poitiers, Angoulème, Bordeaux, Arcachon, Pau, Bagnères-de-Bigorre, and Dinan in Brittany), Spain and Germany, before settling for three years at Halstead Hall in Halstead in north-west Kent, a location which later inspired The Railway Children (this distinction has also been claimed by the Derbyshire town of New Mills). At eighteen, Nesbit met the bank clerk Hubert Bland in 1877. Seven months pregnant, she married Bland on 22 April 1880, though she did not immediately live with him, as Bland initially continued to live with his mother. Their marriage was a stormy one. Early on Nesbit discovered that another woman believed she was Hubert's fiancee and had also borne him a child. A more serious blow came later when she discovered that her good friend, Alice Hoatson, was pregnant with Hubert's child. She had previously agreed to adopt Hoatson's child and allow Hoatson to live with her as their housekeeper. After she discovered the truth, they quarrelled violently and she suggested that Hoatson and the baby should leave; her husband threatened to leave Edith if she disowned the baby and its mother. Hoatson remained with them as a housekeeper and secretary and became pregnant by Bland again 13 years later. Edith again adopted Hoatson's child. Nesbit's children were Paul Bland (1880-1940), to whom The Railway Children was dedicated; Iris Bland (1881-1950s); Fabian Bland (1885-1900); Rosamund Bland (1886-1950), to whom The Book of Dragons was dedicated; and John Bland (1898-1971) to whom The House of Arden was dedicated. Her son Fabian died aged 15 after a tonsil operation; Nesbit dedicated a number of books to him: Five Children and It and its sequels, as well as The Story of the Treasure Seekers and its sequels. Nesbit's adopted daughter Rosamund collaborated with her on the book Cat Tales....
