Written by leading experts in African studies, this broad introduction to Nigeria follows the history of the republic from the early period to the present day. As Africa's most populated country and major world exporter of oil, Nigeria is a nation with considerable international importance—a role that is hampered by its economic underdevelopment and political instability. This book examines all major aspects of Nigeria's geography, politics, and culture, addressing the area's current attempts at building a strong nation, developing a robust economy, and stabilizing its domestic affairs. Perfect for students of African history, geography, anthropology, and political science, this guidebook provides an overview and history of Nigeria from the early period to contemporary times. Chapters focus on each region in the country; the government, economy and culture of Nigeria; the challenges and problems Nigerians face since the country's independence; and topics affecting everyday life, including music, food, etiquette, gender roles, and marriage.

Download Against All Odds Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The 1960s in Africa was a period of significant political transformation which saw the end of European colonialism and the emergence of independent African states. Like other emerging nations in Africa, Nigeria entered the postcolonial period with a sense of optimism. As various Nigerian societies began to respond to the emerging political systems bequeathed by British colonialism, the ideology and culture of ethnic politics began to find resonance among the political elites from diverse ethnic groups. By the middle of the 1960s, Nigeria had begun to experience political crises that culminated in the Nigeria-Biafra war (1967-1970) which pitched the rest of Nigeria against the Igbo of the Southeast. Against All Odds explores the experiences of the Igbo in postcolonial Nigeria. It evinces both the grim side of postcolonial politics in Nigeria, particularly the horrors of ethnic politics, civil war, and the Igbo example of perseverance and human potential to overcome dreadful conditions of such magnitude. The collection illuminates the tension emanating from the enduring colonial legacies and their influences on Nigerian peoples and public life. Against All Odds links socioeconomic, cultural, and political events in Nigeria since the 1960s and the peculiar circumstances faced by the Igbo ethnic group with the continuing attempts to forge a more perfect nation state in which every constituent group is treated with fairness and equity. This book will appeal to the wider academic community working on modern Nigeria. It will also be of value to those whose work involves the nature of the postcolonial state in Africa and the crisis of nation building in modern Africa.

Download Imagining Vernacular Histories Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Imagining Vernacular Histories is centered on the idea of engaging with indigenous African cosmologies that signal at pluriversality. In conversation with Toyin Falola’s reading of the African pluriverse and his exploration of the idea of “ritual archives,” the contributors to this volume rethink the historical archive in search of vernacular histories. Simultaneously, they recognize the contributions from various other disciplines in pluralizing the term vernacular. The book brings together a wide range of topics, such as reflections on African historiography; the relationship between memory, history and literature; gender relations; and the construction of historical archives. While appropriating Falola’s conception of vernacular histories, the contributors collectively argue that pluriversality and ritual archives can potentially rescue African historical and creative scholarship from the sustained practices of epistemicide. Simultaneously, Imagining Vernacular Histories focuses on the emerging interdisciplinary conversations on constructing the pluriverse as well as on the geopolitics of knowledge production. Through a critical appreciation of Falola’s engagement with the ideas of postcoloniality, decolonizing epistemologies, and pluriversality, this book locates his scholarship in relation to postcolonial theory emerging from the Global South.
