Thoroughly updated and completely reorganized for a sharper clinical focus, the Fifth Edition of this world-renowned classic synthesizes the latest advances in basic neurobiology, biological psychiatry, and clinical neuropsychopharmacology. The book establishes a critical bridge connecting new discoveries in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, and neuroimaging with the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of all neuropsychiatric disorders. Nine sections focus on specific groups of disorders, covering clinical course, genetics, neurobiology, neuroimaging, and current and emerging therapeutics. Four sections cover neurotransmitter and signal transduction, emerging methods in molecular biology and genetics, emerging imaging technologies and their psychiatric applications, and drug discovery and evaluation. Neuropsychopharmacology is a relatively new subject area in the neurosciences. It is a field of study that describes the effects of drugs from the molecular to the behavioural level and requires integration and synthesis of knowledge from various disciplines including neuroanatomy, physiology, molecular biology, pharmacology and the behavioural sciences. The principal aims of this book are to provide students with a clear understanding of CNS disorders, and an appreciation of how basic and clinical research findings can be translated into therapeutics. After an introduction to the subject area, the remaining chapters are focused on reviewing the main psychiatric and neurological disorders that are covered in most courses. They are discussed in terms of their clinical symptoms, epidemiology, pathology, aetiology, underlying neurobiological and neurochemical mechanisms, pharmacotherapy, adjunctive non-pharmacological treatments, and clinical outcomes. Each chapter of the book is a ‘stand-alone’ chapter and is written in a clear, accessible style. Written by an author with many years teaching and research experience, this textbook will prove invaluable for students of pharmacology, pharmacy and the medical sciences needing a truly integrated introduction to this exciting field.

Advances in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Volume 5: Neuropsychopharmacology contains the proceedings of the 7th International Congress of Pharmacology held in Paris, France, in 1978. The papers explore advances in the understanding of neuropsychopharmacology and cover topics ranging from anti-schizophrenic drugs to drug pathways in depression treatment. Pharmacological interferences with nonstriatal dopaminergic systems are also discussed. This volume is comprised of 21 chapters and opens by considering the nanomolar affinity of pre- and post-synaptic dopamine receptors for neuroleptics. The next section deals with drug pathways in the treatment of depression, with particular reference to the biochemical mechanisms of depressive states and the therapeutic effects of some antidepressants. The following chapters examine dopamine receptors in the nucleus accumbens; modulation of mesolimbic dopamine mechanisms via serotonin and GABA; how mesocortical dopaminergic neurons react to stress; and the behavioral consequences of the interaction between morphine, substance P, and nonstriatal dopamine neurons. This book will be of interest to practitioners in biosciences, pharmacology, physiology, psychology, neurology, and medicine.

Download New frontiers in the neuropsychopharmacology of mental illness Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In recent years, mental illnesses have become recognized as a huge emotional and financial burden to the individual, their relatives and society at large. Stress-related and mood disorders as well as psychoactive substance abuse are among the disorders associated with most disability in high income countries. Suicide, which is often attributed to some underlying mental disorders, is a leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults. At the same time, mental disorders pose some of the toughest challenges in neuroscience research. There are many different categories of mental disorder as defined and classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases 10th Revision (ICD-10). Despite the ongoing improvements of those widely used manuals, the validity and reliability of their diagnoses remain a constant debate. However, it has now become accepted by the scientific community that mental disorders can arise from multiple sources. In that regard, both clinical and animal studies looking at gene-environment interactions have helped to better understand the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology as well as the discovery of treatments for mental disorders. This Research Topic aims to cover recent progress in research studying how genetic make-up and environmental factors (such as stress paradigm or pharmacological treatment) can contribute to the development of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. This Research Topic also seeks to highlight studies looking at affective-like disorders following the intake of drugs of abuse. We also welcome all research articles, review papers, brief communications, and commentary on topics related to the broad field of Neuropsychopharmacology.
