Excerpt from Mosaics, 1902 Excellence may he considered in the light of'an axiom which need only he properly put to hecome self - evident. It is not excellence if it requires to he demonstrated as such; and thus to point out too particularly the merits of a work of art is to admit that they are not merits altogether. The name Mosaics, so says a noted correspoiident of ours, suggests a remark made by a lady thirty-eight years ago when passing this school. The street had just been Inacadamizeil. It consisted of finely broken rocks, rammed down into a sort of mosaic. The lady was fond of puns. As she crossed the rough way, the pointed rocks pressing on her thin shoes made her exclaim: This mosaic is not what it is cracked up to be. It makes my feet mos' ache. We indorse the sentiments of our noted correspondent who trusts that we will not make his head mos' ache with wit and learning, and we hope that you will consider our mosaics more than it is cracked up to be. Download The Adult Learner Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Download A Tale of Two Viruses Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In 1965, French microbiologist André Lwoff was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on lysogeny—one of the two types of viral life cycles—which resolved a contentious debate among scientists about the nature of viruses. A Tale of Two Viruses is the first study of medical virology to compare the history of two groups of medically important viruses—bacteriophages, which infect bacteria, and sarcoma agents, which cause cancer—and the importance of Lwoff’s discovery to our modern understanding of what a virus is. Although these two groups of viruses may at first glance appear to have little in common, they share uniquely parallel histories. The lysogenic cycle, unlike the lytic, enables viruses to replicate in the host cell without destroying it and to remain dormant in a cell’s genetic material indefinitely, or until induced by UV radiation. But until Lwoff’s discovery of the mechanism of lysogeny, microbiologist Félix d’Herelle and pathologist Peyton Rous, who themselves first discovered and argued for the viral identity of bacteriophages and certain types of cancer, respectively, faced opposition from contemporary researchers who would not accept their findings. By following the research trajectories of the two virus groups, Sankaran takes a novel approach to the history of the development of the field of medical virology, considering both the flux in scientific concepts over time and the broader scientific landscapes or styles that shaped those ideas and practices.

Learning to use the research tools to unravel the intricate terminology of classification of antiquities is a formidable task. Van Keuren's work aims to enable students both to use these tools and to devise projects for their own research. After a major reference is presented, handbooks and monographs are successively identified in ways that suggest patterns of information. These patterns will allow students to formulate hypotheses to undertake original research. With use of the library collection, original questions can be asked and answered.

"The last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view ... Unabashed optimism, and unabashed racism, pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics ... Despite its occasional ugliness, the reputation of the 11th persists today because of the staggering depth of knowledge contained with its volumes. It is especially strong in its biographical entries. These delve deeply into the history of men and women prominent in their eras who have since been largely forgotten - except by the historians, scholars"-- The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2012/apr/10/encyclopedia-britannica-11th-edition.
