Though he was best known as a writer of fantastic action-adventure tales, including the Allan Quatermain series from which the modern-day Indiana Jones films drew inspiration, H. Rider Haggard also worked in the genre of historical fiction from time to time. This novel is a fictionalized account of the Israelites' enslavement and eventual escape from Egypt.

An Egyptian prince and a Hebrew woman find love and adventure in this dramatic take on the classic Exodus tale from the author of King’s Solomon’s Mines. Ana, a scribe on his deathbed, narrates this tale of ancient Egypt and the biblical Exodus of the Hebrews. Ana tells of his childhood friend, Prince Seti, heir apparent to the pharaoh, and his travails. First, he is forced to marry his cousin. Then, his father disinherits him for thwarting his wishes to execute the Hebrews. Amid all of that, Seti meets Merapi, a Hebrew woman known as “Moon of Israel,” and a romance blossoms . . . As the story progresses, the Egyptians and Hebrews face internal struggles as well as conflicts with each other. The plagues arise, and the new pharaoh hungers for revenge. Through it all, Seti learns more about himself and what it means to be a real leader.

Has the final countdown to the end days begun? Are the heavens telling us we are nearing the end? Astronomers have noticed it is coming. Historians have noted its significance. In 2014 and 2015, there will be a phenomenon in the skies of four blood moons falling during Jewish feasts. This has only happened three times in recorded history: 1493-94, 1949-50 and 1967-68. Each time these dates have had extraordinary significance for the Israelites. From the discovery of the New World to the creation of modern-day Israel, these years of the four blood moons have truly been turning points in history. Bible prophecy describes the moon being darkened and turned to blood. What is the significance of these signs in the skies? What will the future bring? Prophecy expert Mark Hitchcock guides you through the relevant Bible passages so you can understand the times in which you live.

In 1492, two history-altering events occurred: the Jews and Muslims of Spain were expelled, and Columbus set sail for the New World. Many Spanish Jews chose not to flee and instead became Christian in name only, maintaining their religious traditions in secret. Among them was Luis de Torres, who accompanied Columbus as an interpreter. Over the centuries, de Torres’ descendants traveled across North America, finally settling in the hills of New Mexico. Now, some five hundred years later, it is in these same hills that Miguel Torres, a young amateur astronomer, finds himself trying to understand the mystery that surrounds him and the town he grew up in: Entrada de la Luna, or Gateway to the Moon. Poor health and poverty are the norm in Entrada, and luck is rare. So when Miguel sees an ad for a babysitting job in Santa Fe, he jumps at the opportunity. The family for whom he works, the Rothsteins, are Jewish, and Miguel is surprised to find many of their customs similar to those his own family kept but never understood. Braided throughout the present-day narrative are the powerful stories of the ancestors of Entrada’s residents, portraying both the horrors of the Inquisition and the resilience of families. Moving and unforgettable, Gateway to the Moon beautifully weaves the journeys of the converso Jews into the larger American story.

Moon of Israel (1918) was one of the earliest Haggard books to be filmed (in 1924, as a silent movie directed by Michael Curtiz). The movie adaptation has been released both as Moon of Israel and The Slave Queen. Interestingly, Paramount bought the original film and suppressed it so it wouldn't complete with the release of DeMille's original silent version of The Ten Commandments. As a book, it is an exceptional retelling of the Biblical story of the Exodus. I?m certain most modern readers will be familiar with the original story. By selecting an unlikely viewpoint character?the scribe Ana?Haggard provides a down-to-earth narrator for a story of fantastic proportion. The novel was first serialized in The Cornhill Magazine from January through October in 1918 and released in book for in October 1918. Author and critic Jessica Amanda Salmonson has called Moon of Israel ?a beautifully written Jewish legend, ? and adds, ?Haggard was pro-Zionist advocating a Jewish homeland in Palestine as early as 1915.
