Excerpt from Modern Dancing and Dancers IT is not unlikely that when the art historian of the future comes to treat of the artistic activity of the first decade of the twentieth century, he will remark as one of its most notable accomplishments a renaissance of the art of the Dance. That this renaissance is an accomplished fact, is a matter of common knowledge. Within a relatively short period there have appeared several great dancers, who must necessarily have been preparing themselves for a considerable time previously to their appearance, yet as it were in secret, without cognisance of one another, with a common aim, but without a common plan. Con temporaries in time, they have been as far removed in space as the East is from the West. In all movements which touch the spirit, this circumstance of the simultaneous but independent manifesta tion of a common impulse is at once the most general and the most unaccountable. The still small voice whispers into space and those of a delicate hearing hear and respond. We content ourselves by repeating the explanation, which is no explanation, that the movement is in the air. Excerpt from Modern Dance for the Youth of America The Dying Swan was typical of an art that found subject matter in romantic fancies. Like the ballet of which it was a part, it used a system of movement common to Russia, Italy and France. This tech nique was so systematized that the ballet dancer could go from one school of dance to another, and find that his techniques would serve him well in each, and that he could follow the instructions of his teacher without making fundamental changes in his style of movement. Excerpt from Dancing and Dancers of Today: The Modern Revival of Dancing as an Art For now appeared a child, graceful, but mechanical; well trained, yet with an automaton-like precision, unspontaneous, unresponsive. In each hand she carried an American flag, and what she danced is best described as: One, two, three, kick! One, two, three, kick, just as high as the little leg could go. Then again, One, two, three, kick; two to the right and wave the right-hand flag; two to the left and wave the left-hand flag! Excerpt from The Book of the Dance When I decided to publish in book form the pictures of the dance which I had made during the last few years, my object was not to make a book of personalities. I merely wanted to show some of the phases of modern dance tendencies that could be recorded in a pictorially interesting manner. This, therefore, is meant to be just a picture book, permanently recording some, thing of the fugitive charm of rhythmic motion, significant gesz ture and brilliant color which the dance has once more brought into our lives. The pictures, arranged simply in groups, are even without titles. What they are intended to convey would not have been helped by labels.
