Excerpt from Mississippi Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletins, 1954-1956 This study was undertaken with sev eral objectives: to find what factors contributed toward profitable farming in Jefferson Davis County in 1950; to see which of these factors were most important; to study the relationships among the factors that affect labor in come; and to determine trends in the organization of the farms and farm enterprises over a period of years. During the summer of 1951, records of the farm business organization were obtained by personal farm-to-farm visits to 155 Negro owner-operated farms (135 farms Operated by non Veterans and 20 farms Operated by Veterans) in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi. The period studied was the year January 1, 1950 to December 31, A county highway map was used to locate communities. The teacher of agriculture and/ or principal of each school within the area supplied the name and location of each farmer who owned and Operated a farm within that district. An attempt was made to get a record from each farmer listed. Dur ing the course of the survey, the rec ords were checked, first in the field and again in the office.
