We almost invariably find that the workingman is for peace, and here again is a point of contact that Friends have with the workingman who cannot understand how the gospel of peace and love can be preached by those who uphold war. In taking up the Temperance question in which so many Friends are vitally interested and have done so much, it is sad to see that the great strides that might be made by us as a Society are hindered by the blindness of so many which prevents them from seeing that there is more than one way of working. If we could handle this subject in a spirit of love, and present an unbroken front, allowing some to take up one line which appeals specially to them, and some another, our influence would be very much multiplied. One more of the many problems which face Americans to-day is one which we have an inherited right to try to solve. I mean the negro problem. We believe in the inherent right of every man to be justly dealt with, and should put all the weight of our influence against their being legislated against as a class or treated in an unfair manner as individuals. I remember some years ago, while sitting in a prominent church at one of our watering places, noticing that the church was crowded with the exception of one seat on which was sitting a respectable colored man, and no one wished to sit on that. It seemed very sad that in a church dedicated to Jesus, the exponent of love, such a thing could be done. Similar things and worse occur every day, and we should be careful to show our colors, and let no opportunity pass of trying to influence others in their attitude towards the negro.
