Excerpt from Memoirs Read Before the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 3: Being a New Series of the Boston Journal of Natural History; 1878-1894 From these observations, it will be seen that the muscular system of Distomum resem bles that of the Cestods more closely than it does that of the Planarians. But the exist ence of the single row of external longitudinal muscular fibres should be especially noted as bearing upon the homologies of the muscular layers of Plathelminths. This subject has been discussed in my paper (see above) in Semper's Arbeiten. It also overthrows, beyond all question, Schneider's1 attempt to classify worms according to their muscular systems, because some species of Taenia do, and others do not, have the external longitudi nal layer, and it is evident that orders and classes cannot be founded upon characters that are not constant within the limits of one genus.2. Excerpt from Memoirs Read Before the Boston Society of Natural History, 1886-1893, Vol. 4: Being a New Series of the Boston Journal of Natural History It was the writer's intention originally to limit the discussion to mammalian bones, and this plan has been followed in the main, but he has been led in one or two instances to refer to those of other classes. Let 1is now pass in review, the proximal ends of the humerus and femur of a number of mammals, beginning with man, and having compared the bones of the two extremities in the same species together, then compare each with the corresponding bones of other animals. Excerpt from Memoirs Read Before the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 1: Being a New Series of the Boston Journal of Natural History The class of Polyps has undergone many changes, as it has been found necessary, from time to time, to remove groups belonging to other classes, confounded with it so long as their structure was imperfectly understood. The true polyps were for the first time divided into the two natural orders characterized by the number and structure of the tentacles, by milne-edwards and Audouin, in 1828, but at that time no special names were applied to the two groups thus established.
