Studying the neutrino cross sections of various materials is of great importance in the analysis of data from neutrino oscillation experiments, as well as interesting in its own right. We have examined the charged-current muon neutrino cross section ratio between lead and scintillator, with our lead target being in the MINERvA electromagnetic calorimeter. This choice has allowed us to obtain usable efficiencies out to much larger muon angles than was feasible from the upstream targets. Comparing the cross section ratio in the data and Monte Carlo, we have found that the ratios agree reasonably well as a function of neutrino energy, but with a distinct excess at low energies. However, there are significant differences between data and Monte Carlo at low and high values of Bjorken x.

Download Relative Cross Section Measurment of Inclusive Charged Current Multiple Pion Production to Inclusive Charged Current from Muon Neutrinos at the Near Detector of the T2K Experiment Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The Tokai-to-Kamiokande (T2K) experiment is an off-axis, long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based in Japan. One of the largest sources of systematic uncertainty in the oscillation analysis is the uncertainty on neutrino cross sections. In this thesis, we use the [pi]0 detector (P0D) of the T2K Near Detector to measure one cross section of muon neutrinos. The P0D is a scintillator based detector with a precision water target which allows for a measurement with water and without water. In particular, we measured the relative cross section of charged current multiple pion production to inclusive charged current production. The analysis is performed with a multi-variate template fit using two Monte Carlo neutrino generators, NEUT and GENIE. The relative ratio for NEUT(GENIE) is 0.126 ± 0.024+[0.022-0.021] (0.100 ± 0.018 [+0.018-0.017]) for the Water-In configuration and 0.104 ± 0.029 [+0.030-0.035] (0.121 ± 0.021[+0.034-0.036]) for the Water-Out configuration. The prospects for a precision water cross section measurement are also discussed.

Download Measurement of $\nu_\mu$-induced Charged-current Neutral Pion Production Cross Sections on Mineral Oil at $E_\nu\in0.5-2.0$ GeV. Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
MiniBooNE reports the first absolute cross sections for neutral current single [pi]° production on CH2 induced by neutrino and antineutrino interactions measured from the largest sets of NC [pi]° events collected to date. The principal result consists of differential cross sections measured as functions of [pi]° momentum and [pi]° angle averaged over the neutrino flux at MiniBooNE. We find total cross sections of (4.76 ± 0.05{sub stat} ± 0.76{sub sys}) x 10−4° cm2/nucleon at a mean energy of E{sub [nu]} = 808 MeV and (1.48 ± 0.05{sub stat} ± 0.23{sub sys}) x 10−4° cm2/nucleon at a mean energy of E{sub {nu}} = 664 MeV for {nu}{sub {mu}} and {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} induced production, respectively. In addition, we have included measurements of the neutrino and antineutrino total cross sections for incoherent exclusive NC 1[pi]° production corrected for the effects of final state interactions to compare to prior results.

Download Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The handbook centers on detection techniques in the field of particle physics, medical imaging and related subjects. It is structured into three parts. The first one is dealing with basic ideas of particle detectors, followed by applications of these devices in high energy physics and other fields. In the last part the large field of medical imaging using similar detection techniques is described. The different chapters of the book are written by world experts in their field. Clear instructions on the detection techniques and principles in terms of relevant operation parameters for scientists and graduate students are given.Detailed tables and diagrams will make this a very useful handbook for the application of these techniques in many different fields like physics, medicine, biology and other areas of natural science.

Download Particle Detectors Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.
