While fast fashion has relegated the handicraft to maquiladoras in the Global South, Spanish and Latin American authors have created protagonists whose skill with needle and thread allows them to break out of culturally confining roles and spaces. In this fictional realm, seamstresses and tailors enter exciting adventures as spies, peacemakers, or explorers, all facilitated by their artistry and expertise. This book examines the depiction of women and the textile arts in contemporary Hispanic and Brazilian literature. Employing space and gender theories, the book explores how sewing, traditionally viewed as respectable only if practiced at home, gives agency and encourages self-reflection and mobility, allowing protagonists to transgress physical and socially prescribed limits. Texts analyzed include María Dueñas's El tiempo entre costuras (2009), César Aira's La costurera y el viento (1994), Pedro Lemebel's Tengo miedo torero (2001), Frances Ponte de Peebles's The Seamstress (2009), and children's literature. Encouraging readers to look behind garments to the agents of production, the book shows how contemporary authors, through their celebrations of an age-old skill, help to renew interest in sewing, tailoring, upcycling, and embroidery.le only if practiced at home, gives agency and encourages self-reflection and mobility, allowing protagonists to transgress physical and socially prescribed limits. This collection, which transports readers from the age of manuscripts to the digital word, is a good demonstration not only of the current vitality of studies of Catalan language and literature, but also of the variety of interests and theoretical approaches and the diversity of origin of Catalan researchers. The studies are focused primarily on three thematic areas: a) culture and language between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries; b) one hundred years of Catalan literature: 1859-1959; and c) multilingualism and interculturality. The collected studies will prove to make a solid contribution to the unstoppable progress that Catalan philology has been making for decades.

Mapping the Megalopolis: Order and Disorder in Mexico City brings the humanities and the social sciences into a conversation about Mexico City in its social, political, and aesthetic manifestations. Through a shared exploration of the order and disorder that mutually constitute the city, contributing authors engage topics such as the privatization of public space, challenges to existing conceptualizations of the urban form, and variations on the flâneur and other urban actors. Mexico City is truly a city of versions, and Mapping the Megalopolis celebrates the intersection of the image of the city and the lived experience of it. Readers will find substantive entries on a great variety of Mexico City’s monumental and counter-monumental spaces, as well as some of its pivotal contemporary debates and cultural products. The volume serves both as supplemental reading on the world city or the Latin American city, and as a central text in a multidisciplinary study of Mexico City.

This magical tale of love and rivalry between two brothers in Mexico is an “intense, engaging, psychologically deep [novel that] lives up to its title” (Ex Libris). Miguel is beautiful. His beauty is so rare and miraculous that it has made him the object of cult-like devotion in the city. With a mix of admiration and disquiet, his older brother Santiago observes the prodigious effect that Miguel’s looks have on his mother and father, neighbors, passersby, and the droves of female suitors who follow him everywhere. With Miguel constantly under the spotlight, Santiago is left to inhabit darker, hidden places, from where he will finally learn that life is not easy for anyone, even his prodigiously handsome brother. Set in Mexico, this story is narrated with deep psychological insight yet shines with the mythical light of magical realism. Disappointments, flights, regrets, reunions, goodbyes, epiphanies make up this story, as we follow the two brothers, their family, the women they love, and the people around them—all forever marked, each in their own way, by their extraordinary encounter with Beauty. “Massimo Cuomo’s writing, not the protagonist’s beauty, is what’s truly wonderful about this book.” —Coooperazione
