People are immersed in electromagnetic fields from such sources as power lines, domestic appliances, mobile phones, and even electrical storms. Tom S. Tenforde A programma tic effort to assess the effects of magneticfield exposure on living organisms and man is under way at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. This program, which is supported by the Division of Biomedical and Environmental Research of the U. S. Department of Energy, has three principal aspects. First, in a project for which I serve as the coordinator, a series of biophysical experiments are being carried out to determine magnetic field effects on molecular, cellular and whole-animal test systems. A second effort, headed by Dr. Thomas Budinger, involves epidemiological studies designed to evaluate potential health effects in groups of scientists and industrial workers who have been occupationally exposed to high magnetic fields. The third project is the establishment of magnetic field exposure guidelines by a six-member committee composed of scientists from through out the U. S. and headed by Dr. Edward Alpen, Director of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Biology and Medicine Division. During the initial phase of this program, it became increasingly clear to all of the scientists involved that it would be a worthwhile effort to hold a Biomagnetic Effects Workshop. There were, in fact, three reasons underlying our decision to sponsor such a conference: First of alL more than a decade has passed since there was a large conference in the United States devoted exclusively to biomagnetic research.

In the future, strong magnetic fields will play a greater role in the environment of man. In preparation for this the frontal plane ECG of subhuman primates in strong magnetic fields (100,000 oersted) was recorded. A pulsating electrical signal (flowgram) was found superimposed on the ECG, giving information on mechanical as well as electrical performance of the heart. No influence of the magnetic field on cardiac regulation was observed during short exposure periods. (Author).

I am very pleased that my book The Geomagnetic Field and Life is being published in English in the United States. My book on the geomagnetic field can be regarded as an abstraction, whose purpose is to provide a better picture and understanding of the world araund us, its main driving forces, and factors, to help us to know ourselves, and to proceed further. The essence of the abstraction is that in treating the problern I have deliberately ignored the diverse effects of various extemal factors on living organisms and have confined myself to an analysis of the effect of the GMF. This approach allows me to go one step further-to draw various conclusions and propose theories that rnight bring us closer to a proper understanding of the true nature of the phenomena. Philosophers have long been aware that by such abstract thinking we can deterrnine the nature of phenomena more reliably, completely, and comprehensively, penetrate to the very core of the observed effects, and perceive the depth of their interrelations.

The magnetosphere is an intrinsic component of the Earth environment, and travel beyond this sphere will expose man to near absence of a magnetic field. The present study is a continuation of a previous investigation of the physiological and psychological effects of prolonged exposure of man to low intensity magnetic fields. In support of previous findings, a significant gradual decrease of the scotopic flicker fusion threshold was observed from which the subjects recovered after exposure.
