The abstracts of wills and administrations are arranged throughout in more or less chronological order by the name of the deceased. The will records give the name of the testator, names of legatees (often showing relationships), summaries of bequests made in the will, date of the will, date of recording, and the page number of the will book wherein the full will is recorded. The administration records generally provide the dates of inventory and appraisal, names of auditors and appraisers, and references concerning the settlement of the estate. The approximately 2,500 wills and administrations in this work refer to approximately 8,000 persons. Many of the wills furnish evidence of North Carolina connections as well.

The First Census of the United States in 1790 comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia. However, the United States Government, with the cooperation of the Virginia State Library, published the "Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790; Records of the State Enumerations 1782 to 1785: Virginia," in an attempt to partially reconstruct Virginia's 1790 Census. This book is a critical supplement to the United States Census of 1790. It consists of an alphabetical listing of approximately 34,000 taxpayers in Virginia that were not included in the 1790 Census, and whose names were compiled from personal property tax lists from 35 individual Virginia counties. Softcover, (1940), repr. 2006, Alphabetical Listing, 146 pp.

The Byrds of Virginia are among the most powerful and influential families in this country--and are also one of the oldest. The first Byrd ("William I") settled in Virginia in 1670 and was the founder of the Byrd dynasty that is vigorously represented today by Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. Now, eminent author Alden Hatch, with style, wit and extraordinary scholarship, traces the history of the Byrds from 1670 to the present in one of the most engrossing and important biographies of an American family to appear in many years. -- Front book flap
