Metastases determine malignancy. The main attention so far has been focused upon organ metastases. The molecular mechanisms thereof, while far from being totally elucidated, are increasingly well understood. Modern diagnostic tools now enable detection and precise localization of small lesions. In contrast, our knowl edge and diagnostic capabilities regarding metastatic spread to the'lymphatic system are rather limited. However, there have re cently been a number of interesting advances. It is the aim of this volume to submit these developments to detailed analysis. The therapeutic relevance of enhanced sensitivity in detection of lymph node metastases has to be considered in the light of in creased morbidity versus eventual prognostic improvements by modification of therapy. An interesting concept which might im prove diagnostic accuracy while reducing operative morbidity is the "sentinel node" technique. Surgical standards are lacking, however, and many fundamental questions pertaining to precise lymphatic mapping remain unanswered. Whether the sentinel node concept is of general relevance or whether it is applicable in only a few organs remains to be determined. This book offers intensive discussion of the concept from methodological and tu mor biological viewpoints. World-renowned experts with long term involvement in related basic and clinical research provide the reader with a broad survey of actual knowledge together with a critical appraisal of recent and future developments. We sincerely hope this book succeeds in providing an outlook as a reference for all clinicians on future prospects and serving and researchers in this extremely important field.

Download Atlas of Lymphatic System in Cancer Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This atlas contains a large number of original photographs illustrating the anatomy, research methods, and structural features of the structure of the lymphatic apparatus in oncological diseases. The tissue complexes of the axillary region have been studied in detail. The lymphatic maps of the axillary region in cancer are presented, including those with manifestations of lymphangiogenesis; newly formed lymph nodes formed as a result of neolymphogenesis are also considered. Atlas of Lymphatic System in Cancer: Sentinel Lymph Node, Lymphangiogenesis and Neolymphogenesis is intended for oncologists, anatomists, morphologists and doctors of other specialties. The book is the result of ten years of research. The applied technology of ultrasonic isolation of anatomical structures made it possible to take a fresh look at the lymphatic apparatus in cancer and describe the phenomenon of neolymphogenesis.

Download The Sentinel Lymph Node Concept Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The practical application of the sentinel node concept is evaluated in this book. The concept is analyzed for breast cancer, malignant melanoma, tumors of the face, oropharynx, lung, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. The first part of the book describes the function and use of the nuclear medicine equipment, the tracers used, colloid solutions and modern developments in histological and immunohistochemical lymph node investigations, as well as possible pitfalls. In the second part, specific tumor-related problems are described.

Download Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
An intuitive, ingenious and powerful technique, sentinel lymph node biopsy has entered clinical practice with astonishing rapidity and now represents a new standard of care for melanoma and breast cancer patients, while showing great promise for the treatment of urologic, colorectal, gynecologic, and head and neck cancers. This text, written by international experts in the technique, provides a clear and comprehensive guide, presenting a detailed overview and discussing the various mapping techniques available and how these are applied in a number of leading institutions. This essential resource for surgical onocologists, pathologists, and specialists in nuclear medicine will also provide key information for those planning to start a sentinel lymph node program.

Download Lymph Node Metastasis in Gastrointestinal Cancer Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of lymph node micrometastasis (LMM) and sentinel node navigation surgery (SNNS) in gastrointestinal cancers. Lymph node metastasis is a critically important prognostic factor in gastrointestinal tract cancers such as tumors of the esophagus, stomach, and colorectum. An understanding of the basic aspects of lymphatics and lymph nodes, including anatomy, histology, physiology, immunology, and molecular biology, is fundamental for physicians who are involved in cancer treatment. Furthermore, owing to the development of molecular and biological methodology, the precise recognition of LMM and its clinical significance have been clarified recently. At the same time, SNNS has actually been anticipated in treatment of breast tumors, and it is now being introduced in gastrointestinal tract cancer. For the application of SNNS, the detection of lymph node metastasis including LMM is extremely significant, because the presence of LMM determines the direction for surgery and chemo and/or radiation therapy. With these considerations in mind, the expert contributors to this book review basic and clinical approaches for LMM and SNNS including methodology for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus this volume benefits not only surgeons who treat gastrointestinal cancers but also clinical oncologists and medical scientists such as physiologists and pathologists.

Download Nuclear Oncology Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Nuclear Oncology a contemporary narrative of the role of nuclear medicine in oncology with an emphasis on SPECT/CT and PET/CT with additional comments when appropriate on the potential application of PET/MR and to a lesser degree, targeted radionuclide therapy. This book focuses on the use of radionuclides in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases. It describes relevant approved and investigational clinical applications, instrumentation & technology, chemistry and practical clinical issues in nuclear oncology. The basic science and current research topics of nuclear oncology are addressed in separate chapters. Nuclear medicine has become an essential component to all phases of the management of the patient with a malignant tumor and in some cases, even benign neoplasms. The standard of practice for many tumors requires PET/CT imaging at various stages of diagnosis and management. In addition to clinical applications, ongoing investigational efforts, which more and more involve multi-institutional protocols, are also presented. Features: • Focuses on the use of radionuclides in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases • Emphasizes SPECT/CT and PET/CT with additional emphasis on the potential application of PET/MR • Describes relevant approved and investigational clinical applications, instrumentation & technology, chemistry and practical clinical issues in nuclear oncology

Download Atlas of Selective Sentinel Lymphadenectomy for Melanoma, Breast Cancer and Colon Cancer Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Atlas of Selective Lymphadenectomy for Melanoma, Breast Cancer and Colon Cancer emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach combining the experiences of a nuclear medicine physician, surgeon, and pathologist. This is an important reference also for researchers and clinicians who want to become familiar with sentinel lymph node mapping. The underlying thesis in solid tumor biology is that metastasis in general starts in an orderly progression with lymphatic spread first to the sentinel lymph node (SLN) in the nearest lymph node basin. Therefore, the logical approach is to harvest that specific SLN for thorough analysis.
