This dissertation investigates the challenges in designing low-profile, compact and broadband antennas for HF, VHF, UHF applications and presents novel antenna solutions to address them. This thesis focuses on three major HF-UHF applications and proposes antenna solutions for them. The first application is ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna design for HF-UHF applications. This is mainly useful in military systems where the antenna should demonstrate monopole-like radiation characteristics and should be as small as possible specially having a low-profile antenna design is highly desired. The second part of the thesis focuses on applications where low-profile and compact antennas with directional radiation patterns are required. This application requires wide bandwidths to enable relatively high data rate and long-range communications, wideband jamming purposes, and to reduce the co-site interference between multiple antennas operating on frequency bands located near each other. The third application that this dissertation focuses on is small-aperture direction-finding (DF) systems for HF-UHF applications. The limited size of the antenna aperture inversely impacts the accuracy of the DF system and limits its bandwidth of operation. A novel broadband antenna solution is introduced to address such challenges. Finally, a possible future work that this thesis can be extended to further address the issue of size-performance tradeoff in antenna design for HF-UHF applications.
