Why?Why did I capture so many pictures of the world's most vibrant city in shutdown mode?Let's just call this the great escape . . .Looking back, it seems like a lifetime ago, the beginning of the lockdown. I remember people were hoarding all the toilet paper and water bottles they could get their hands on, not to mention hand sanitizer and masks. The news would show empty grocery shelves, lines of scared people. Hearing words I had never heard before or paid attention to in the past: Pandemic, Coronavirus, Covid-19, Lockdown, Social Distancing, PPE, Contact Tracing, and the worst - Self Isolate. All of this craziness added to my need to get away. I would work out in the mornings at the park, then come home and try to be productive. There was no work for me at the time, so I didn't want to just watch TV and pour myself a drink. There had to be something more.Well, it wasn't in me to stay in confinement. It really started to mess with my emotions, prompting my demons to rise to the surface. Photography has always been a Zen escape for me; when I'm shooting, nothing else enters my head. No crazy thoughts or distractions.Whether I captured an image that day or not, the simple act of getting out was all I needed. Nine times out of ten, I came home with pictures, a definite bonus. My excursions would take about three or four hours, and yes, I was prepared to wear my mask and respect social distancing guidelines. Fortunately, that wasn't an issue, as I was always alone, at least during the beginning phase of my adventure.

Even Covid-19 couldn't stop Las Vegas from providing endless entertainment for long. Whether walking around a casino or on the sidewalk of the world famous Las Vegas Strip, interesting, and sometimes questionable, things can be heard. That's where I come in. I write them down. In the final book of this trilogy, I have provided over 450 more out-of-the-blue moments in time and another 100 pictures just as random. Think of it as a digital or soft cover coffee table book where you can open it up to just about any page and find something to make you smile. Isn't that really the point?

Why? Why did I capture so many pictures of the world's most vibrant city in shutdown mode? Let's just call this the Great Escape from Isolation. Looking back, it seems like a lifetime ago, the beginning of the lockdown. The news would show empty grocery shelves and lines of scared people. Words I had never heard before or paid attention to in the past: Pandemic, Coronavirus, Covid-19, Lockdown, Social Distancing, PPE, Contact Tracing, and the worst, Quarantine. All of this craziness added to my need to get away from isolation. I would work out in the mornings at the park, then come home and try to be productive. There was no work for me at the time, so I didn't want to just watch TV and pour myself a drink. There had to be something more. Well, it wasn't in me to stay in confinement. My excursions would take about three or four hours, and yes, I was prepared to wear my mask and respect social distancing guidelines. Fortunately, that wasn't an issue, as I was always alone, at least during the beginning phase of my adventure. My modus operandi would be to head out late afternoon, early evening, a little before what those in our profession call "golden hour." It's the magical time of daylight, a half-hour before the sun hits the horizon and a half-hour after it dips below. When the sunlight is golden, and the sky is still blue.

This book asks whether the decision to lock down the world was justified in proportion to the potential harms and risks generated by the Covid-19 virus. Drawing on global, empirical data, it explores and exposes the social harms induced by lockdowns, many of which are 'hidden', including joblessness, mental health problems and an intensification of societal inequalities and divisions. It offers data-driven case studies on harms such as domestic violence, child abuse, the distress of being ordered to stay at home, and the numerous harms associated with the new wealth industries. It explores why some people weren't compliant with lockdown restrictions and examines the already vulnerable social groups who were disproportionally affected by lockdown including those who were locked in (care home residents), locked up (prisoners), and locked out (migrant workers, refugees). The book closes with a brief discussion on what the future might look like as we enter a post-Covid world, drawing on cutting-edge social theory.
