My African Journey describes Winston Churchill's journey up the Uganda Railroad. Churchill was the Under-secretary of State for the Colonies when he undertook the journey of East Africa in 1907. He gives wonderful descriptions of the countryside and meetings with local tribes, and provides an authentic look into late colonial attitudes.

Research on cities worldwide still takes its cue from cities in Europe and the US, which are seen as the standard model. However, cities in the global South are undergoing a much more rapid transformation, including multiple interlinked transitions, with Africa featuring the highest urbanization rates world-wide. Scholars therefore call for a new approach to urban studies which examines cities from a more global comparative perspective. This book discusses the new approach, which pays added attention to the role that societal creativity plays in processes of urbanization, instead of concentrating exclusively on expert-driven planning and intervention. Especially in fast-growing cities with weaker institutional capacity for interventions, the interplay between intervention and invention, between expert and societal agency, becomes more tangible and all the more significant. The highest accolade I can give Prakash is to say he is a humanitarian. He has great empathy for all kinds of people he encountered in east Africa where he grew up, in the United Kingdom where he studied Industrial Chemistry, and in Canada where he makes his home today and works with Metro Testing and Engineering Services Limited as a Senior Materials Engineering Technologist. He is also an internationalist who seeks to understand the richness of the human spirit through great spiritual leaders past and present like Mahatma Gandhi of India, Dalai Lama of Tibet, the Reverend Desmond Tutu of South Africa, and Spiritual Chiefs of our Native North American Indians. He has given back to his community in Canada and is a respected member of his profession. - Virgil Dias (From the New River Free Press International) I have just finished your book while sitting by the pool. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I like the way you presented the story and the honesty of the message. I can totally see you welcoming a stranger to your home as you did on several occasions to provide them with comforts at the expense of you and your family. In fact, the message you leave the reader with you is became richer for having the experience to assist one less fortunate than you. Well done my friend! Undoubtably you have taught your children and those close to you what it means to be a special person who demonstrates a real love for life. All the best, Rob Deverall

An ethnographic study of poetry and its place among young Afghan refugees living in urban regions of Iran. The Pearl of Dari takes us into the heart of Afghan refugee life in the Islamic Republic of Iran through a rich ethnographic portrait of the circle of poets and intellectuals who make up the “Pearl of Dari” cultural organization. Dari is the name by which the Persian language is known in Afghanistan. Afghan immigrants in Iran, refugees from the Soviet war in Afghanistan, are marginalized and restricted to menial jobs and lower-income neighborhoods. Ambitious and creative refugee youth have taken to writing poetry to tell their story as a group and to improve their prospects for a better life. At the same time, they are altering the ancient tradition of Persian love poetry by promoting greater individualism in realms such as gender and marriage. Zuzanna Olszewska offers compelling insights into the social life of poetry in an urban, Middle Eastern setting largely unknown in the West. Praise for The Pearl of Dari “The Pearl of Dari offers the reader the precious pearl of a genuine reading and learning experience. Zuzanna Olszewska combines solid scholarship with uplifting sensitivity to create a lively narrative replete with joyful discoveries of genuine personhood, agency, and humanity in the midst of multiple marginalities, an account of growing up amid layer upon layer of tension, bravely defying overwhelming odds.” —Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, University of Maryland “Olszewska’s virtuoso study explores how young progressive Afghan intellectuals use the writing and performance of poetry as a prestigious discourse, to sustain community and claim dignity in exile. Her work makes an essential new contribution in Persian literary studies, ethnolinguistics, and refugee cultural studies worldwide.” —Margaret A. Mills, Professor Emerita of Persian and Folklore, Ohio State University

True heroes are not born heroes but are made heroes. Ultimately, our struggles and accomplishments inspire others. Great people come and go but the legacy is left behind for people to emulate, talk about and remember. This book is about a man that impacted my life. We should learn to appreciate the fact that in the natural world, great beings and intelligent beings dont die but continue living with the legacy left behind. The greatest of all people is Jesus Christ. He came on earth with a vision and goal to die in order to redeem others. He did not win for His own sake but He made all of us winners. He is our real icon of faith, peace, love, hope, redemption, unity, compassion, transparency, reconciliation, forgiveness, empathy... name it. This book is not just a biography but it is written in a compelling way to encourage your faith. Like all my books, it is not necessarily profiled to appeal to your emotions. It is written for the seekers of meaning and creators of legacy. Those of you who have read my books, the serial anecdotes point to the character of a teacher. I am a teacher by calling and write with prior intention to teach. I am neither a celebrated poet nor professional entertainer. Great story tellers leave you exited and wanting but a teacher leaves you thinking. I believe that a preacher that invokes your reasoning is the prince of the pulpit.

Scenes of starvation have drawn the world's attention to Africa's agricultural and environmental crisis. Some observers question whether this continent can ever hope to feed its growing population. Yet there is an overlooked food resource in sub-Saharan Africa that has vast potential: native food plants. When experts were asked to nominate African food plants for inclusion in a new book, a list of 30 species grew quickly to hundreds. All in all, Africa has more than 2,000 native grains and fruitsâ€""lost" species due for rediscovery and exploitation. This volume focuses on native cereals, including: African rice, reserved until recently as a luxury food for religious rituals. Finger millet, neglected internationally although it is a staple for millions. Fonio (acha), probably the oldest African cereal and sometimes called "hungry rice." Pearl millet, a widely used grain that still holds great untapped potential. Sorghum, with prospects for making the twenty-first century the "century of sorghum." Tef, in many ways ideal but only now enjoying budding commercial production. Other cultivated and wild grains. This readable and engaging book dispels myths, often based on Western bias, about the nutritional value, flavor, and yield of these African grains. Designed as a tool for economic development, the volume is organized with increasing levels of detail to meet the needs of both lay and professional readers. The authors present the available information on where and how each grain is grown, harvested, and processed, and they list its benefits and limitations as a food source. The authors describe "next steps" for increasing the use of each grain, outline research needs, and address issues in building commercial production. Sidebars cover such interesting points as the potential use of gene mapping and other "high-tech" agricultural techniques on these grains. This fact-filled volume will be of great interest to agricultural experts, entrepreneurs, researchers, and individuals concerned about restoring food production, environmental health, and economic opportunity in sub-Saharan Africa.
