Excerpt from Lives of the Archbishops of Canterbury, Vol. 1: Anglo-Saxon Period The present volume of "The Lives of the Archbishops of Canterbury," comprises the history of the Anglo-Saxon Church. Such a history could not have been attempted a few years ago, as a portion only of a larger work, owing to the difficulty which existed of obtaining access to the original authorities. This difficulty has now been, in great measure, removed. The "Monumenta Historica Britan-nica," published by Her Majesty's command in 1848, under the able editorship of Mr. Petrie and Mr. Sharpe, has placed within reach the writings of Gildas, Nennius, Bede, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Asser, Plorence of Worcester, Simeon of Durham, Henry of Huntingdon, Gaimar, and the Annales Cambriae. I may be permitted to add my regrets to those of every student of history, that, owing to the expense of publication, the English government has been unable to continue this series of national documents. But something in this direction has been accomplished, through the energy and sound judgment of the Master of the Bolls, Sir John Romilly. Under his sanction and by his appointment, "The Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland" are in a course of publication.
