Excerpt from Light on the Roosevelt Movement This book is a deliberate attack upon the utterly false, viciously unjust and deadly dangerous systems represented by ex-judge and twenty-seventh President, William Howard Taft; ex-President and emperor at large Theodore RooseveI am not trying to start a revolution but hoping and praying to be able to do my part toward forestalling one which is surely coming if things go on as they have been running, and conditions are not rapidly changed in favor of the toilers who produce the wealth of the Nation. It has long been patent to me that not more than one-tenth of our people are hopeful, happy or prosperous. This life story is drawn from the heartaches and headaches of thirty-three years experience in the battle for bread; composed under a driving impulse; compiled without loss of any time from employment and practically without the aid of books. I possess no books to speak of and had no time to visit libraries. The writer has only a very common school education and has done little reading since he enlisted for life in the Grand Army of Workers. Therefore any statement herein which does not square with facts is an error of memory or judgment and not made with intention to mislead. Pamphlet published on individual responsibility and at personal expense without asking financial aid, literary assistance or helpful advice of anybody on earth. I feel that I have a backer in this undertaking who does not strike a partnership with selfish money grubbers, and to that belief I shall cling. Something seems to tell me that any man who really desires to help the plain people must not only come from their ranks but must remain with them. Whenever he associates with the idle rich, professional politicians and lets them pay his expenses he immediately becomes one of them in spirit, and loses all power to faithfully and effectively serve common folks. I am asking my personal friends to take up the first small edition on condition that if the story is not worth the price they return it and receive back their dimes. That's what I call the square deal. Furthermore, I request true friends who are quick and not dead to study my dreams and see if they can trace any direct connection between these celestial visions and the practical solution of our vexing temporal problems. I want such friends to help me decide if I am what president Taft calls a neurotic, incapable of self-government, or whether I am being called to undertake a high mission for mankind, "In the Union of all who Love, For the Service of all who suffer." "This first full edition of Theodore Roosevelt campaign speeches takes readers on the stump from New England to California, collecting thirty-five texts largely overlooked since they were first delivered. They offer a more nuanced picture of his third-party candidacy than has ever existed, providing a companion to Lewis Gould's recent Four Hats in the Ring and shedding new light on both the Progressive movement and the dynamics of an extraordinary campaign that changed American politics forever." "Culled from newspaper archives nationwide, these speeches show TR at his most radical. He echoes the missionary spirit of the Progressives as they challenged partisan orthodoxy, advocating for "the plain people, for their right to rule, and for their duty to secure for themselves and for others social and industrial justice." All over the country, he speaks out on government regulation of business, social justice, the role of the president, the place of reform in national politics, and of course his differences with Woodrow Wilson."--BOOK JACKET.

The World Movement is a lecture by Theodore Roosevelt and was Delivered at the University of Berlin, May 12, 1910.Theodore "T.R." Roosevelt, Jr. (October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919) was an American politician, author, naturalist, soldier, explorer, and historian who served as the 26th President of the United States. He was a leader of the Republican Party (GOP) and founder of the Progressive Party insurgency of 1912. He is known for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements, and his leadership of the Progressive Movement, as well as his "cowboy" persona and robust masculinity. Born into a wealthy family in New York City, Roosevelt was a sickly child who suffered from asthma. To overcome his physical weakness, he embraced a strenuous life. He was home-schooled and became an eager student of nature. He attended Harvard College where he studied biology, boxed, and developed an interest in naval affairs. He quickly entered politics, determined to become a member of the ruling class. In 1881 he was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he became a leader of the reform faction of the GOP. His book The Naval War of 1812 (1882) established him as a learned historian and writer. When his first wife Alice died two days after giving birth in February 1884 (and his mother died the same day in the same house), he was heartbroken and in despair; Roosevelt temporarily left politics and became a cattle rancher in the Dakotas. When blizzards destroyed his herd, he returned to New York City politics, running and losing a race for mayor. In the 1890s he took vigorous charge of the city police as New York City Police Commissioner. By 1897, under President William McKinley, Roosevelt was in effect running the Navy Department. When the war with Spain broke out in 1898, he helped form the famous Rough Riders, a combination of wealthy Easterners and Western cowboys. He gained national fame for his courage in battle in Cuba, then returned to be elected Governor of New York. He was the GOP nominee for Vice President with William McKinley, campaigning successfully against radicalism and for prosperity, national honor, imperialism (regarding the Philippines), high tariffs and the gold standard.Roosevelt became President after McKinley was assassinated in 1901. He was inaugurated at age 42, the youngest person to become president. He attempted to move the GOP toward Progressivism, including trust busting and increased regulation of businesses. In November 1904 he was reelected in a landslide against conservative Democrat Alton Brooks Parker. Roosevelt called his domestic policies a "Square Deal", promising a fair deal to the average citizen while breaking up monopolistic corporations, holding down railroad rates, and guaranteeing pure food and drugs. He was the first president to speak out on conservation, and he greatly expanded the system of national parks and national forests. By 1907 he propounded more radical reforms, which were blocked by the conservative Republicans in Congress. His foreign policy focused on the Caribbean, where he built the Panama Canal and guarded its approaches. There were no wars, but his slogan, "Speak softly and carry a big stick" was underscored by sending the greatly expanded Navy—the Great White Fleet—on a world tour. He negotiated an end to the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize.
