Excerpt from Letters and Verses of Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, Between the Years 1829 and 1881 The material from which this selection of Dean Stanley's letters has been made is abundant. But the choice has been restricted by several considerations. From their private nature a large number of the letters are unsuitable for publication; a still larger number refer to matters which would be of little interest to the general public; others have been already used in the 'Life of Dean Stanley, ' or were incorporated in his writings with little or no change; others turn upon theological controversies which have, perhaps, occupied too large a space in the recently published biography of their writer, and are therefore excluded from these pages. The letters given here have been chosen, as far as possible, for their general interest, or for the light which they throw upon the character, tastes, and habits of mind of the late Dean Stanley, and upon the moral and intellectual influences by which he was most powerfully affected.
