Excerpt from Lectures Upon the Whole Epistle of St. Paul to the Philippians: Delivered in St. Peter's Church in Oxford It was a piece of unselfish heroism on the part of our Commentator' to accept the presentation to Charlton. He knew that he should thereby be involved in a costly litigation because of circumstances: nevertheless he threw himself into the struggle. The whole story is told by himself in his posthumous tractate 'touching his suit in law for the Rectory of Charlton, ' 1621. It lacks general interest now, but, as we have said, exhibits his public spirit and affection for his College in a striking light. We chanced upon a copy of the old tract in the British Museum Library, - a copy having certain interesting manuscript notes, and a printed 'appendix, ' not always added, - and without entering into very minute details, a few facts may be indicated, more especially as the good man, as well as his editor, Potter, was holily jealous to set himself right, and 'to satisfy others' in regard to the 'tedious suit in law, ' and in his own words, 'of my ministry, my degree, my service, my place of government.'
