Country Joe and Me is about a rock-folk icon and a San Francisco public school teacher. A long time ago Country Joe McDonald and his Navy pal Ron Cabral had an idea to write a book about the story of their lives. They met in 1960 while serving in the U.S. Navy as 18-year old sailors at Atsugi, Japan. Follow their interactions over several decades a roller coaster ride of shared experiences in the military, education and music. Told by Cabral from the perspective of "ground zero" it offers a unique look at the emergence of Country Joe and the cultural, political, and musical revolution that blossomed in San Francisco and Berkeley during the late 60's and early 70's-- There are chapters on Country Joe and The Fish, Janis Joplin and Joe's brief love affair with her. Go behind the scenes with Bill Graham and Jerry Garcia during "Summerland" - a very special project for high school students initiated by Country Joe while he was a volunteer teacher in Ron's school called Opportunity High. Also included are the lyrics to some of Country Joe's most important songs, memorabilia, rare photos, a discography and a lot more-- There is a special Afterword by Country Joe on his role with the Vietnam Vets over the years. Download Stranger Citizens Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Stranger Citizens examines how foreign migrants who resided in the United States gave shape to citizenship in the decades after American independence in 1783. During this formative time, lawmakers attempted to shape citizenship and the place of immigrants in the new nation, while granting the national government new powers such as deportation. John McNelis O'Keefe argues that despite the challenges of public and official hostility that they faced in the late 1700s and early 1800s, migrant groups worked through lobbying, engagement with government officials, and public protest to create forms of citizenship that worked for them. This push was made not only by white men immigrating from Europe; immigrants of color were able to secure footholds of rights and citizenship, while migrant women asserted legal independence, challenging traditional notions of women's subordination. Stranger Citizens emphasizes the making of citizenship from the perspectives of migrants themselves, and demonstrates the rich varieties and understandings of citizenship and personhood exercised by foreign migrants and refugees. O'Keefe boldly reverses the top-down model wherein citizenship was constructed only by political leaders and the courts. Thanks to generous funding from the Sustainable History Monograph Pilot and the Mellon Foundation the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other Open Access repositories.

Download The Diary of Juliet Thompson Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This diary is the day by day account which Juliet Thompson, one of the early Bahá'ís of New York, kept of her many hours with 'Abdu'l-Bahá-first on pilgrimage to "Akká in 1909, then in Europe in 1911, and finally in America in 1912."Juliet is one of my favorites," 'Abdu'l-Bahá had said. His fatherly love for her - encouraging, comforting, guiding, warning, sometimes even chastising - is recorded, page by page. Juliet's love for 'Abdu'l-Bahá is also vividly kept here. To this divine love she devoted her life, becoming an immortal teacher of the Cause, serving faithfully until her death in 1956.This inspirational and surprisingly relatable story is a must read for every Baha'i seeking to understand the early believers' relationship with Abdu'l-Baha, and the qualities we all possess to help us in our effort to advance the Baha'i World Order.

Download The Mandaean Book of John Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Given the degree of popular fascination with Gnostic religions, it is surprising how few pay attention to the one such religion that has survived from antiquity until the present day: Mandaism. Mandaeans, who esteem John the Baptist as the most famous adherent to their religion, have in our time found themselves driven from their historic homelands by war and oppression. Today, they are a community in crisis, but they provide us with unparalleled access to a library of ancient Gnostic scriptures, as part of the living tradition that has sustained them across the centuries. Gnostic texts such as these have caught popular interest in recent times, as traditional assumptions about the original forms and cultural contexts of related religious traditions, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, have been called into question. However, we can learn only so much from texts in isolation from their own contexts. Mandaean literature uniquely allows us not only to increase our knowledge about Gnosticism, and by extension all these other religions, but also to observe the relationship between Gnostic texts, rituals, beliefs, and living practices, both historically and in the present day.

Download Does God Have a Big Toe? Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Before there was anything, there was God, and a few angels, and a huge swirling glob of rocks and water with no place to go. The angels asked God, "Why don't you clean up this mess?" This collection of short, funny stories is one man's interpretation of how God did just that -- with some very unlikely help. There was Adam, who decided to number the animals instead of giving them names -- until he lost count. There was Max, a matchmaking angel disguised as a camel. And who could forget the kindly dolphins of the Red Sea or the builders of the spectacularly chaotic Tower of Babel, whose foundation rests in one small girl's question: "Mommy, does God have a big toe?" Reflecting Mr. Gellman's lifelong love for his subject, this witty collection of midrashim provides a wonderful way to learn about and to share the stories of the Bible. Distinguished artist Oscar de Mejo brings the right blend of reverence and humor with his magnificent oil paintings.
