Excerpt from Kaska Tales Beaver went on, and came to a bluff overlooking a deep creek. He heard a dog barking below the cliff. He listened, and approached cautiously. Presently he saw a man on the top of the cliff, and went to him. This was sheep-man, who killed people by pushing them over the cliff. His Wife attracted them by barking like a dog, and any who were not killed outright by the fall were clubbed by her at the bottom of the cliff. When Beaver reached sheep-man, the latter said, Look at the sheep down below! Beaver said, You look first, you saw them first. They quarrelled as to who should look over the brink first. At last sheep-man looked, and Beaver at once pushed him over. He was killed by the fall.2 When sheep-man's wife heard the thud of something falling at the base of the cliff, she ran out quickly, and began to club the man before she noticed that it was her own husband. She then looked up and saw Beaver, who threw a rock at her head and killed her. This is why the head of the mountain-sheep is so small between the horns; and the tongues of sheep are black because they once ate men. Download The Winter's Tale Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Winter's Tale: With an Introduction and Notes For the materials Of his plot, Shakespeare has, as fre The source. Quently, been content to take a well known novel of the time, in the present instance, that of Pandosto, or Dams tus and Fawm'a, by Robert Greene; but though closely following the story in its main incidents, more especially in the earlier portions, he has introduced characters (antigonus, Paulina, and Autolycus) which have no anti types in the novel, and by his spiritual treatment of the subject has made it as much his own as if he had drawn upon his invention for the whole story. Download Ten'a Texts and Tales, Vol. 6 Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Ten'a Texts and Tales, Vol. 6: From Anvik, Alaska The people have no history, in the proper sense of the term. The identity of the father is sunk in that of the child, and no account is to be heard among them of deeds of valor performed by their ancestors. NO names of famous men appear to have been handed down among them. The small-pox epidemic of 1839, and the appear ance of the first steamboat on the Yukon, in 1869, furnish dates by which the ages of the older generation may be ascertained. From this it appears that the oldest indi vidual at Anvik, and probably in any of the villages within a radius Of' fifty miles from Anvik, is seventy-one years Old. This is a woman. Fortunately, her memory is clear, and her mentality above the average. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Pacha of Many Tales, Vol. 1 of 3 And as the world spins round, the why is of little moment. The honours are bequeathed, but not the good, or the evil deeds, or the talents by which they were obtained. In the latter, we have but a life interest, for the eu tail is cut off by death. Aristocracy in all its varieties is as necessary for the well binding of society, as the divers grades between the gene ml and the common soldier are essential in the field. Never then inquire, why this or that man has been raised above his fellows; but, each night as you retire to bed, thank Heaven that you are not a King.
