Excerpt from Journal of Orificial Surgery, Vol. 6: 1897-98 Examining more closely, now, the vaginal walls, we will do what we can with scissors and curette in the way of smoothing the sur face, after which, by the aid of the rectal bivalve, we will give the vaginal walls all the tension they will bear without causing a rent. Having accomplished this, let us give attention to the parts about the pudenda. First of all, with the spud end of the hysterectomy knife we will loosen the hood of the clitoris and clear away the smegma, smearing the parts with lanoline. We will now clip away the roughened and hardened projections about the orifices of the urethra and vulva, after which we will amputate the thickened and hardened margins of the labia minora. There is little bleeding, as the parts are so lifeless. By a continuous thread of fine catgut we will close the margins of the wound made by the removal of the labia minora. Excerpt from The Western Journal of Medicine and Surgery, 1845, Vol. 3 These remarks are not intended to depreciate the value of free internal medication. Indeed, in most of the cases in which I have used the poultice it has been in conjunction, or at least, not to the exclusion of any other remedy which might have been thought avaflable - so that one who may be disposed to cavil, might with some plausibility, dispute its agency in producmg the beneficial results which I have aseri bed to it. Nevertheless, in a great majority of the cases in which I have resorted to it, in the diseases alluded to, its ef feet has been so apparent that notwithstanding the adminis tration of other remedies, at the same time, no one could mistake its promptly favorable influence. And it frequently happens that our only means of making an impression upon the disease is through the agency of external applications. As, in cerebral congestions attended with coma and insensibili ty, it is always difficult, and sometimes even impossible, to ad minister medicines internally - in such cases the mustard poultice is entitled to the very first and highest consideration, as the remedy most likely to produce the desired objects.
