Part I of each volume will feature 5-7 major review chapters, including 2-3 long chapters reviewing topics of major concern to the American Jewish community written by top experts on each topic, review chapters on "National Affairs" and "Jewish Communal Affairs" and articles on the Jewish population of the United States and the World Jewish Population. Future major review chapters will include such topics as Jewish Education in America, American Jewish Philanthropy, Israel/Diaspora Relations, American Jewish Demography, American Jewish History, LGBT Issues in American Jewry, American Jews and National Elections, Orthodox Judaism in the US, Conservative Judaism in the US, Reform Judaism in the US, Jewish Involvement in the Labor Movement, Perspectives in American Jewish Sociology, Recent Trends in American Judaism, Impact of Feminism on American Jewish Life, American Jewish Museums, Anti-Semitism in America, and Inter-Religious Dialogue in America. Part II-V of each volume will continue the tradition of listing Jewish Federations, national Jewish organizations, Jewish periodicals, and obituaries. But to this list are added lists of Jewish Community Centers, Jewish Camps, Jewish Museums, Holocaust Museums, and Jewish honorees (both those honored through awards by Jewish organizations and by receiving honors, such as Presidential Medals of Freedom and Academy Awards, from the secular world). We expand the Year Book tradition of bringing academic research to the Jewish communal world by adding lists of academic journals, articles in academic journals on Jewish topics, Jewish websites, and books on American and Canadian Jews. Finally, we add a list of major events in the North American Jewish Community.

Excerpt from The Organization Problem of Jewish Community Life in America In the discussion of this topic we must at the outset assume that there is valid reason for the existence of distinctly Jewish communities wherever a minyan (at least ten adult Jews) dwell in one place, because their interests in some respects are distinct from the interests of other people living in the same place. These special interests may be religious, educational and philanthropic - never political. It is cause for satisfaction that the Jews of this country have never presented a homogeneous attitude, as Jews, toward any political question, except where such a question involved the rights and dignities of American citizenship, as in the Russian passport matter. Here the Jews united to secure the abrogation of the treaty with Russia, because that treaty, in discriminating against the Jews of the United States, was an affront to American citizenship. Attempts on the part of politicians to create Jewish political clubs and groups have met uniformly with such vehement resentment on the part of all Jewish elements as to indicate unmistakably that in politics the Jews do not desire to be a community. Political elections have shown that Jews are divided on political questions so freely that there cannot be the barest suspicion that racial or religious considerations at any time constitute a basis for political affiliations. In religious matters and in philanthropic affairs they have followed distinct lines, quite like other religious and racial elements in the population. But in these fields they have not been united; in fact, there have been such sharp divisions as to make the word "community," as descriptive of their organized charities, an inaccurate term, if not an actual misnomer. The reasons for these divisions are to be traced ultimately to the fact that the Jews of America, though ethnologically one race, come from many different countries of the globe and naturally possess differences of traditions, customs, theologies, language, outline, and frequently even of physique. Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote is an allegorical picture book about the hardships and struggles of immigration from award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh. A Pura Belpré Author and Illustrator Honor Book! An ALA/ALSC Notable Children’s Book! Papa Rabbit left two years ago to travel far away north to find work in the great carrot and lettuce fields to earn money for his family. When Papa does not return home on the designated day, Pancho sets out to find him. He packs Papa’s favorite meal—mole, rice and beans, a heap of still-warm tortillas, and a jug full of fresh aguamiel—and heads north. Along the way, Pancho crosses a river, climbs a fence, and passes through a tunnel guarded by uniformed, bribe-taking snakes. He soon meets a coyote, who offers to help Pancho in exchange for some of Papa’s favorite foods. They travel together until the food is gone and the coyote decides he is still hungry . . . for Pancho! Tonatiuh enlivens Pancho’s story with the spirit of regional folklore, and he adds cultural atmosphere in arresting, flat folk art filled with cultural references. Of course, “coyote” has two meanings here. With tenderness and honesty, he brings to light the trials and tribulations facing families who seek to make better lives for themselves and their children by illegally crossing borders. “Incandescent, humane and terribly necessary.” ―Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review) “Pancho Rabbit’s trip has the feel of a classic fable or fairy tale.” ―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

An update and revision of the original 1976 edition, this study presents a two-fold discussion: a basic survey of the structure and functions of the American Jewish community, and a suggestion as to how that community should be understood as a body politic, a collective unit that is not a state but is no less real from a political perspective.
