Since it was founded in 1826, Jefferson Barracks has stood for nearly two centuries as a symbol for many aspects of America's history. Many explorative expeditions in the 19th century launched from Jefferson Barracks, an iconic gateway to the West during the country's expansion. A training ground for new programs, Jefferson Barracks was the home of America's first permanent Dragoons (later the United States Cavalry), first School of Infantry, and first regiment of buffalo soldiers. The largest induction and mustering-out center during both the First and Second World Wars, it housed and trained a myriad of soldiers before and after their deployments. Now the home of the Missouri Air National Guard, a Veterans Administration hospital, Jefferson Barracks Historic Park, a national cemetery, and a growing museum district, Jefferson Barracks is preserving its place in history as well as serving toward America's future. The historic images in this book illustrate a rich history of Jefferson Barracks through some of its citizen soldiers--famous and not--and through the incidents that made it an American icon.

When the Cavalry Recruit Depot closed at Jefferson Barracks in October 1894 troops of the line, the 3rd Cavalry, moved in. The 3rd Cavalry would remain at the post until the Spanish-American War in 1898. At this time Jefferson Barracks again became a troop rendezvous and training facility. Volume II will go into detail the role that Jefferson Barracks played in the Spanish-American War, World War I, the years between wars, and World War II. Training would remain a primary mission throughout the years 1894 to 1941. After World War I Washington did not know what to do with the Army, return to pre-war status, remain large or something in between. Citizens Military Training Camps will be described as will other special camps and training organizations. Finally, in September 1940 Jefferson Barracks was turned over to the Army's Air Corps and an entirely new organization and mission had to be established. Volume II will cover all of this and much more.

Jefferson Barracks was founded in 1826 to become the United States Army's first infantry School of Practice. In addition to serving as a school of practice, Jefferson Barracks was a military reservation during the settlement of the western territories. As such, most units of the army called Jefferson Barracks home at some point in time during the nineteenth century. The first five mounted regiments in the army all organized at Jefferson Barracks: the Regiment of Dragoons, in 1833; the Second Dragoons, in 1836; the Regiment of Mounted Rifles, in 1846; and the First and Second Cavalry Regiments, in 1855. With many different units stationed at Jefferson Barracks at one time or another and the new units organizing there, the best and brightest young officers in the army were sure to appear at this important military post at some point. In addition, troops from Jefferson Barracks took part in every conflict in which the United States was involved from the Black Hawk War in 1832 through World War II. This book provides a brief biography of the officers that served at Jefferson Barracks who became general officers in both the U.S. Army and the Army of the Confederate States of America. The book also contains a brief biography of the men who were awarded the Medal of Honor and who served at Jefferson Barracks.
