Jake the Adjective When Jake's nemesis pulls a prank and turns Grammaropolis into a grey, misshapen, tasteless town, Jake is forced to run around restoring everything--the colors, shapes, sizes, tastes, and more--to the way it was all meant to be. Jake the Adjective is part of the nine-book Meet the Parts of Speech series starring the eight parts of speech, who are personified based on the roles they play in the sentence. From the shady pronoun always trying to take the noun's place to the motherly conjunction who just wants everyone to get along, the Meet the Parts of Speech series uses the mechanics of character and story (plot, motivation, setting, etc.) to breathe life into what has traditionally been unengaging subject matter. "Learning grammar has never been more fun!" ---School Library Journal

Excerpt from Jake And these things were part of Jake. These things are with me still. Not that Jake haunts me in the ordinary sense of the word. His spirit was too gentle, too unassuming, too thoughtful of others to do anything so positive as to haunt one. He would, I think, be genuinely sorry that I remem ber aught of him but the sense of comradeship, the many pleasant hours we had together in the days when we were both young enough so that the mere surface of life, the being alive and well on a sunny day, the reading of a good yarn or the sight of the delectable knees of musical comedy were enough to make us forget the tragic frame of life. Reviews of the two-volume New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, 2005: The king is dead. Long live the king! The old Partridge is not really dead; it remains the best record of British slang antedating 1945 Now, however, the preferred source for information about English slang of the past 60 years is the New Partridge. James Rettig, Booklist, American Library Association Most slang dictionaries are no better than momgrams or a rub of the brush, put together by shmegegges looking to make some moola. The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, on the other hand, is the wee babes. Ian Sansom, The Guardian The Concise New Partridge presents, for the first time, all the slang terms from the New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English in a single volume. With over 60,000 entries from around the English-speaking world, the Concise gives you the language of beats, hipsters, Teddy Boys, mods and rockers, hippies, pimps, druggies, whores, punks, skinheads, ravers, surfers, Valley girls, dudes, pill-popping truck drivers, hackers, rappers and more. The Concise New Partridge is a spectacular resource infused with humour and learning its rude, its delightful, and its a prize for anyone with a love of language.

The Routledge Dictionary of Modern American Slang offers the ultimate record of modern, post WW2 American Slang. The 25,000 entries are accompanied by citations that authenticate the words as well as offer examples of usage from popular literature, newspapers, magazines, movies, television shows, musical lyrics, and Internet user groups. Etymology, cultural context, country of origin and the date the word was first used are also provided. In terms of content, the cultural transformations since 1945 are astounding. Television, computers, drugs, music, unpopular wars, youth movements, changing racial sensitivities and attitudes towards sex and sexuality are all substantial factors that have shaped culture and language. This new edition includes over 500 new headwords collected with citations from the last five years, a period of immense change in the English language, as well as revised existing entries with new dating and citations. No term is excluded on the grounds that it might be considered offensive as a racial, ethnic, religious, sexual or any kind of slur. This dictionary contains many entries and citations that will, and should, offend. Rich, scholarly and informative, The Routledge Dictionary of Modern American Slang and Unconventional English is an indispensable resource for language researchers, lexicographers and translators.

Jake is about the smartest older brother a kid could have. He reads from thick books, and seems to know something about everything. He knows about planets and stars, and told me that crocodiles can't stick out their tongues, and only girl mosquitoes bite. Once he even told me how babies are born, but I don't think he was right about that. Jake likes eggs just about any way you can cook them, which I think is totally disgusting. He also gets up way too early on Saturday mornings, which means he'll be getting me up too. But outside of that, he's the best guy I could ever imagine hanging out with. We have some great adventures -- even if we do get in trouble once in a while. Jake is a very smart kid, and his brother knows it. Sometimes being smart gets you into trouble by thinking of things you shouldn't. Things that leave you feeling like a lobster in a pot of boiling water. When their dog comes home with Mrs. Wilson's dead rabbit in his mouth, the boys know they need a foolproof plan to deal with the situation.
