To a publishing company, ever book is an event, but once in a while a manuscript appears that electrifies even the most sophisticated editor. Such a manuscript is Jacqueline, an account of shocking and hitherto unknown letters written by Jacqueline de Prozinard to her "natural" father, the utterly unnatural Marquis de Sade during his confinement in Charenton Asylum, to which he had been sent on account of his incorrigible debauchery. These letters were discovered by the translator in the French national archives during a research project. Elated by his astonishing find, Denard's literary interest soon gave way to outrage as he read through the bundle of letters. Clearly, this was a case of "like father, like daughter," as Jacqueline proved beyond all doubt the where cruelty and perverse sexuality were concerned, the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Justine was an early work of the Marquis de Sade written while imprisoned in the Bastille. It contains relatively little of the obscenity which characterized his later writing. Napoleon Bonaparte called Justine "the most abominable book ever engendered by the most depraved imagination." Bonaparte ordered the arrest of Sade who as a result was incarcerated for the last 13 years of his life.

The work " Justine: The Misfortunes of Virtue" was produced by the Marquis de Sade in the year 1787. The initial milestone of Justine's misfortunes is the death of her father, the loss of the family fortune, and the attempts of the governess to lead her and her sister, Juliette, into a life outside the law. Juliette accepts the fate to which the governess points, but Justine's refusal leads her to flee. Throughout Justine's journey, spanning from the age of 12 to 26, vice proves inseparable from virtue, both as a result of the incessantly undertaken escape. At each stage, a mark is inflicted upon the protagonist, with the clergy, aristocracy, merchants, judiciary, wealthy, and powerful invariably appearing as actors in the circus of obscenities where the other is reduced to an object of their will. In the emblematic ending, where the Marquis de Sade illustrates his philosophy of life, the stories of the sisters intersect once again, prompting reflection from the reader.
