We suggest a procedure, based on the kinematics of qg-scattering in high-p/sub T/ events, whereby it is possible to obtain enriched samples of quark and gluon jets. At SppS energies this could be used to indicate whether quark and gluon jet fragmentation agree or not. At higher energies the application would rather be to study the differences in the parton cascades, i.e. jet substructure.

This paper discusses a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use (almost equal to) 90 pb−1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DO detector. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process p{bar p} --> tb + X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process p{bar p} --> tqb + X is 58 pb.

Heavy quarks are powerful tools for the study of the properties of the high-density QCD medium created in heavy-ion collisions as they are sensitive to the transport properties of the medium and may interact with the QCD matter differently from light quarks. As the main observables to study the medium effect, the D0 nuclear modification factor (RAA) provides insights into the flavor dependence of in-medium parton energy loss, and the D0 azimuthal anisotropy coefficient (Vn) provides information about the degree of the thermalization of the bulk medium. Furthermore, the production of D0 in jets is sensitive to the diffusion in the medium and the role of medium response. Using the large proton-proton and PbPb data samples at [square root of] SNN = 5.02 TeV collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), high precision measurements of Do have been performed.
