This report describes the investigation of a phase-locked loop (PLL) demodulator considered for use with the parametric acoustic receiving array (PARRAY). The PARRAY as an acoustic sensor is explained and the effects of longitudinal transducer motion on the PARRAY are described. This transducer vibration produces intermodulation products between the desired acoustic signals and the vibration induced signals. Both theoretical analysis and experimental data showing that the PLL demodulator can reduce this intermodulation in a PARRAY are given. Comparison is made between theoretically predicted PLL intermodulation reduction and measurements taken with simulated PARRAY signals. Also, experimental data are described showing the operation of the demodulator with a PARRAY undergoing transducer vibration. (Author).

The parametric acoustic receiving array (PARRAY) exploits the nonlinearity of acoustic waves in water to achieve directional reception of low frequency acoustic waves using only two high frequency transducers and associated electronics. In mobile applications the parametric receiver will be required to operate under the influence of sensor motion, and in water that is sometimes turbulent. This report describes these two areas of technical risk which are pertinent to the successful implementation of PARRAYs on submarine platforms. Analysis, fabrication, and testing of a phase-locked loop receiver is described. This type of receiver is shown to be well suited for demodulating the output of a mobile PARRAY hydrophone and reducing the detrimental effects of transducer motion on the PARRAY. For mobile applications the transducers will be moving with respect to the water and will create some degree of turbulence near the sensors. Investigations of the effects of turbulence on the operation of the PARRAY are discussed. These investigations allow predictions of the magnitude of amplitude and phase fluctuations generated at the PARRAY hydrophone output for known levels of turbulence. (Author).

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

The comprehensive research activity around the World in the fields of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing being strongly supported by new experimental technique and equipment and by the parallel fast developments in computer technology and solid state devices, which has led to a rapidly reducing cost of digital processing thus enabling more complex processing to be carried out economically, emphasize how necessary it is at intervals of a few years through a NATO Advanced Study Institute (NATO ASI) and guided by leading experts to study the conquests in the fields of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing. This need of study is moreover stressed by the interdisciplina rity of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing, where a strong impact from other branches of science, - Geophysics, Radioastronomy, Bioengineering, Telecommunication, Seismology, Space Research etc. - is taking place, which makes it an extre mely difficult task for scientists to follow-up the development in all its phases and to preserve the general view of its rapid ly increasing number of possibilities. The present Proceedings of the NATO ASI held in Copenhagen during August 1980 join the series of proceedings of NATO summer schools on Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing held during the past 20 years. The equality and the fusion of the individual research fields of Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing and the separate introduction of advanced research results from other scientific areas related to underwater acoustics such as transducers characterize the subject matter of this NATO ASI.

This book is intended for the reader who wishes to gain a solid understanding of Phase Locked Loop architectures and their applications. It provides a unique balance between both theoretical perspectives and practical design trade-offs. Engineers faced with real world design problems will find this book to be a valuable reference providing example implementations, the underlying equations that describe synthesizer behavior, and measured results that will improve confidence that the equations are a reliable predictor of system behavior. New material in the Fourth Edition includes partially integrated loop filter implementations, voltage controlled oscillators, and modulation using the PLL.
