Guy Maddin started making films in his back yard and on his kitchen table. Now his unique work, which relies heavily on such archaic means as black and white small-format cinematography and silent-film storytelling, premieres at major film festivals around the world and is avidly discussed in the critical press. Into the Past provides a complete and systematic critical commentary on each of Maddin's feature films and shorts, from his 1986 debut film The Dead Father through to his highly successful 2008 full-length 'docu-fantasia' My Winnipeg. William Beard's extensive analysis of Maddin's narrative and aesthetic strategies, themes, influences, and underlying issues also examines the origins and production history of each film. Each of Maddin's projects and collaborations showcase his gradual evolution as a filmmaker and his singular development of narrative forms. Beard's close readings of these films illuminate, among other things, the profound ways in which Maddin's art is founded in the past - both in the cultural past, and in his personal memory.

Download Say This Prayer into the Past Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
"Say This Prayer into the Past reckons with cadavers in the family closet, a house lost to a wildfire, and the heartbreaking beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Along the way, Paul Willis rekindles the delights of children, the kindness of students, and the solace of the many writers of the past who have accompanied us. These poems speak into the trials and joys the years have rendered. Their purpose is to bless those of us who mourn and to bring some measure of comfort."

A deep study of the uneasy heart by one of the masters of the psychological novel, Journey into the Past, published here for the first time in America, is a novella that was found among Zweig’s papers after his death. Investigating the strange ways in which love, in spite of everything—time, war, betrayal—can last, Zweig tells the story of Ludwig, an ambitious young man from a modest background who falls in love with the wife of his rich employer. His love is returned, and the couple vow to live together, but then Ludwig is dispatched on business to Mexico, and while he is there the First World War breaks out. With travel and even communication across the Atlantic shut down, Ludwig makes a new life in the New World. Years later, however, he returns to Germany to find his beloved a widow and their mutual attraction as strong as ever. But is it possible for love to survive precisely as the impossible?

Download A Peep Into The Past Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This illustrated History has been put together to allow the viewer a peep into the past of the many changes in women’s under fashions which have taken place from the early decades of the 20th century to the first decade of the 21st century. With the exception of drawings of under fashions from the early part of the 20th century, which I I sourced from fashion magazines, and vintage shops in London and Napier New Zealand. The illustrations from the late 1950s to 2000 have been sourced from my own memory and experience. I worked for many decades selling lingerie and under fashions in the retail industry, including experience gained from running and buying for my own Lingerie Boutique for several years. This shop was situated in Napoleon Street Cottesloe, Western Australia. I still have in my possession original drawings depicting nightwear and underfashions which were used for advertising purposes in the West Australian newspaper. Also Calenders given to me by Triumph International; these were used to advertise their wonderful undergarments. All of the above have been an invaluable source for me to refer to. When I commenced creating the pen and ink drawings for this book I wanted to present the garments with as much authenticity as memory and sources allowed; at the same time using my artistic license to present them somewhat tongue in cheek, with the hint of the risqué to make it a much more fun experience for the viewer to enjoy. I have featured in some of the drawings a few examples of the changes over the decades to the style of underwear/nightwear that men wore to illustrate that their fashions also underwent a similar evolution. Today many fashions, Swiss cotton, viyella and some of the fi ne quality silks and wools have become too expensive to use in the production of fi ne lingerie. When the idea came to me to create this “Peep into the Past” it was important for me to record by drawings, some of these wonderful garments which I derived so much pleasure not only from wearing, but also from the experience of selling and handling over the decades many beautiful garments and fabrics.

Download Past into Present Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
First-person interpretation--the portrayal of historical characters through interactive dramatization or roleplaying--is an effective, albeit controversial, method used to bring history to life at museums, historic sites, and other public venues. Stacy Roth examines the techniques of first-person interpretation to identify those that have been most effective with audiences while allowing interpreters to maintain historical fidelity. Past into Present focuses on first-person interpretation's most challenging form: the unscripted, spontaneous, conversational approach employed in "living history" environments such as Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts, Conner Prairie in Indiana, and Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. While acknowledging that a wide range of methods can touch audiences effectively, Roth identifies a core set of practices that combine positive communication techniques, classic interpretive philosophy, and time-tested learning theories to promote audience enjoyment, provoke thought and inquiry, convey important messages and themes, and relate to individual visitor interests. She offers numerous examples of conversation and demonstration strategies, visitor behavior profiles, and suggestions for depicting conflict and controversy, and she provides useful character development guidelines, interpretive training advice, and recommendations for adapting first-person interpretation for diverse audiences.

Jim Campers' "Forward Escape Into the Past" represents the synthesis of his two latest projects. They are situated on the intersection between nostalgia and a visionary utopia. The two photographic series are thematically linked by the title of the exhibition, which suggests an alternative future for humanity. "Forward Escape Into the Past" can be seen as a future far removed from technological progress, in which human beings seek a connection with their past and with nature. Jim Campers publishes his first artist book for the occasion of his solo exhibition in M - Museum Leuven (BE) and in De Brakke Grond Amsterdam (NL). Texts by John Zerzan and Steven Humblet.00Exhibition: M Museum, Leuven, Belgium (18.05.-09.09.2018).
