This paper is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the general issues surrounding an internship program. It answers such questions as: What is an intern or fellow? Where do you find them? What are the requirements? What do they do? What are the legal considerations? What are the security issues? The second part is what we call a "How To" section. It is the nuts and bolts of starting an internship program. It is also the boring part, though efforts have been made so it doesn't read like the U.S. tax code. We started our internship with four interns in the summer of 2009. It has grown so that in each semester we have approximately 20 interns, give or take a few. At press, we have had more than 100 interns come through our doors. We are often asked to assist other organizations in establishing a program. It is not that we have some magic formula but rather we have, through trial and error, found a system that works. And, we want to share it with you so that, hopefully, you need not have to reinvent the wheel. After all, we are trying to work smart, sharing what works and having a selective case of amnesia for what did not!

She has had three investment banking internships spanning UBS (private wealth management), FT Partners (financial technology coverage), and J.P. Morgan in New York (syndicated and leveraged finance). She is co-president of Blyth Fund, a six-figure student investing group, and is on the board of Stanford Finance. Erin is also the Finance Director of Gumball Capital, a student-run startup whose mission is poverty alleviation. WHAT READERS ARE SAYING: "I wish that this book had existed when I was applying for positions back in college. I was a economics major with almost no real job experience, and it must have shown in my interviews. I got lucky because UBS was willing to take a chance on me as a summer intern, which led me to get where I am now. If I could do it again, though, I would take the much easier route and read this book. It would have prepared me for the parts of the job I never imagined." - First Year Analyst At Citigroup "Applying for my summer internship was a rough experience- I was afraid that I would never get the chance to show my skill in investment research to big companies because I would be rejected before I ever made it to the internship stage. Fortunately for me, this book helped me prepare and build my interview skills to the point where I felt that I had not just a fair shot at the job but an unfair advantage over the other candidates. It's a must read." - Current Intern At Goldman Sachs

"Internships: Theory and Practice" focuses on the history, theory, value, design, administration, and evaluation of professional internships as an educational experience for college students. Internships are guided, pre-professional experiences that combine academic and professional components as a managed transition to professional careers. Touted by many as an educational innovation for the 21st century, internships (or experiential learning, or apprenticeships, as they once were called) have been a staple of professional preparation for centuries, dating back at least to the earliest documentation in the Middle Ages and no doubt far beyond that.Charles Sides and Ann Mrvica trace this history through primary sources to explore the development of internship experiences over the past 800 years, create an introduction to the topic of internships, and provide a foundation for modern college-corporation partnerships in professional education and training. The authors present specific guidelines and discussions on issues important to corporations, in terms of providing for internship experiences; issues important to colleges, in terms of designing and evaluating internships; and issues important to students, in terms of participating in and learning from internships.
