Intense Ion and Electron Beams treats intense charged-particle beams used in vacuum tubes, particle beam technology and experimental installations such as free electron lasers and accelerators. It addresses, among other things, the physics and basic theory of intense charged-particle beams; computation and design of charged-particle guns and focusing systems; multiple-beam charged-particle systems; and experimental methods for investigating intense particle beams. The coverage is carefully balanced between the physics of intense charged-particle beams and the design of optical systems for their formation and focusing. It can be recommended to all scientists studying or applying vacuum electronics and charged-particle beam technology, including students, engineers, and researchers.

Physics of Intense Beams in Plasmas is a comprehensive description of the interaction between extremely intense particle beams and plasmas. The emphasis is on experimental beam-plasma physics, but the necessary theory is also explained-much of which is innovative and original. Central to the book is the discussion of beam instabilities, emphasizing their hydrodynamic nature.

The subject of this review paper is the field of intense pulsed ion beam generation and the potential application of the beams to fusion research. Considerable progress has been made over the past six years. The ion injectors discussed utilize the introduction of electrons into vacuum acceleration gaps in conjunction with high voltage pulsed power technology to achieve high output current. Power levels from injectors exceeding 1000 MW/cm2 have been obtained for pulse lengths on the order of 10−7 sec. The first part of the paper treats the physics and technology of intense ion beams. The second part is devoted to applications of intense ion beams in fusion research. A number of potential uses in magnetic confinement systems have been proposed.

An intense charged particle beam can be characterized as an organized charged particle flow for which the effects of beam self-fields are of major importance in describing the evolution of the flow. Research employing such beams is now a rapidly growing field with important applications ranging from the development of high power sources of coherent radiation to inertial confinement fusion. Major programs have now been established at several laboratories in the United States and Great Britain, as well as in the USSR, Japan, and several Eastern and Western European nations. In addition, related research activities are being pursued at the graduate level at several universities in the US and abroad. When the author first entered this field in 1973 there was no single reference text that provided a broad survey of the important topics, yet contained sufficient detail to be of interest to the active researcher. That situation has persisted, and this book is an attempt to fill the void. As such, the text is aimed at the graduate student, or beginning researcher; however, it contains ample information to be a convenient reference source for the advanced worker.

Recently there has been an increased interest in a compact high energy intense light-ion accelerator. Some of the areas of application for such an accelerator include directed energy research, inertial fusion and magnetic fusion. The new approach that has been proposed for investigation is the space charge wave accelerator. With the space charge wave type of collective ion acceleration scheme, one can expect a compact, efficient ion accelerator which is capable of producing high energy and high current ion beams. The ion energy limit occurs when the ion velocity equals that of the electrons. Thus, for an easily producible 1 MeV electron beam about 2 GeV protons are expected. Since a large number of electrons are needed for an intense relativistic electron beam, a proportional but smaller number of ions are expected by momentum balance. With an accelerating electric field having a strength of 1 MV/cm, the 2 GeV proton can be obtained in a short accelerator length of 20 meters.

Magneto-Solid Mechanics Francis C. Moon Comprehensively treats, in monograph form, problems directly related to magneto-solid mechanics. Provides a thoroughly modern examination of the stresses, dynamics, and stability of magneto-mechanical devices such as superconducting magnets, levitated vehicles, magnetic mass drivers, electromagnets, and actuators. Over 60 specific coupled-magneto-mechanical problems are discussed and analyzed, and well over 200 illustrations are included. Physical concepts are introduced early, along with summaries of the basic equations of magneto-solid mechanics, magnetic forces, and energy. 1984 (0 471-88536-3) 436 pp. Chaotic Vibrations An Introduction for Applied Scientists and Engineers Francis C. Moon A valuable work which helps to translate new mathematical ideas in non-linear dynamics and chaos into a language that engineers and scientists can understand. As such it provides specific examples and applications of chaotic dynamics in the physical world and describes how to perform both computer and physical experiments in chaotic dynamics. New ideas in dynamics are explained such as Poincare maps, fractal dimensions and Lyapunov exponents. Includes a glossary of chaotic dynamics terms, a list of computer experiments, and an appendix of details for a demonstration experiment. 1987 (0 471-85685-1) 300 pp.

In this paper we consider the propagation of an intense electron-ion beam across an applied magnetic field. In the absence of the applied field, the beam system is in a Bennett equilibrium state that involves electrons with both large axial and thermal velocities and a cold stationary space-charge neutralizing ion species. Typical parameters under consideration are V{sub o} (approximately) 1 MV, I (approximately) 5 kA, T{sub e} (approximately) 100 keV, and beam radii (approximately) 1 cm. We find that in the intense beam regime, the propagation is limited due to space-charge depression caused by the deflection of the electron beam by the transverse field. This critical field is of the order of the peak self-magnetic field of the electron beam which is substantially higher than the single particle cut-off field. 8 refs., 3 figs.
