Although in many respects much remains to be done, nevertheless, the growth of the work has been rapid and phenomenal, and it might not be an exaggeration to say that at the present time backward and feeble-minded children are receiving more attention and better instruction than any other group of children in our public schools. Most of this growth has been the result of the introduction of the mental examination, because the use of mental tests has clearly revealed the extent of the problem and has allowed us to make the selection of children accurately and quickly. 2. Service of Individual Tests in Locating the Superior Only recently have we become definitely conscious of the presence in our schools of another group of children whose need for special instruction is as great as, if not greater than, that of the backward and feeble-minded. The bright or superior child has been almost entirely neglected. He has been discovered by means of the mental test. After the first interest in the subnormal had subsided, it was inevitable that more and more attention should be paid to those children who were doing exceptionally well in the mental tests. The discovery of these cases was greatly facilitated by the appearance of the Stanford Revision of the Binet Scale, because this scale gave a much better opportunity than the original Binet Scale for a child to make a high mental age. Terman was one of the first to direct attention to the superior child and he has contributed a great deal to our knowledge of the subject.
