Download Integrated Data Integration and Statistical Analysis Platform for Multi-center Epilepsy Research Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Epilepsy is a common serious neurological disorder that affects 65 million people across the world with significant impact on their quality of life. The Managing Epilepsy Well (MEW) Network consisting of 8 study sites is a US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded initiative to develop and implement self-management techniques for epilepsy patients. The MEW database (MEW DB) now present 1681 patient data records. To support cohort identification, data exploration, research query, and statistical method using the MEW DB, we have developed an integrated informatics platform called Insight. The primary features of Insight include: (1) the ability to select suitable research studies according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria; (2) the ability to visualize distribution of data corresponding to various data elements; and (3) the ability to build cohort queries for given requirement. In this thesis project, we have developed the second release of the Insight platform with the implementation of a new feature for statistical data analysis that is critical in large-scale patient cohort studies. The second release version of Insight includes a comprehensive re-engineering of the platform using Django Web development framework. We conducted two types of user evaluation, namely “first click testing” and “user satisfaction survey” and the results demonstrate that Insight is strongly approved by the users.

The Insight integrated platform is designed to support cohort identification, data exploration, and research queries from an integrated database with epilepsy study data from multiple centers using a self-service approach. The innovative features of Insight include: (1) the use of provenance metadata to select research studies with comparable inclusion/exclusion criteria, (2) visualization of data distribution at population level, and (3) interactive selection of query elements to provide essential contextual understanding for non-technical users in building complex cohort queries. Insight was developed to support semantic integration of heterogeneous data from multiple research studies in the Managing Epilepsy Well (MEW) Network. The MEW Network is funded by the U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and consists of 8 centers across the U.S. Our long-term implementation and dissemination plans are moving towards deployment of Insight as a single point integrated portal for past and ongoing community-based epilepsy self-management systems.

Download Computational Neuroscience in Epilepsy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects millions of patients worldwide and arises from the concurrent action of multiple pathophysiological processes. The power of mathematical analysis and computational modeling is increasingly utilized in basic and clinical epilepsy research to better understand the relative importance of the multi-faceted, seizure-related changes taking place in the brain during an epileptic seizure. This groundbreaking book is designed to synthesize the current ideas and future directions of the emerging discipline of computational epilepsy research. Chapters address relevant basic questions (e.g., neuronal gain control) as well as long-standing, critically important clinical challenges (e.g., seizure prediction). Computational Neuroscience in Epilepsy should be of high interest to a wide range of readers, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty working in the fields of basic or clinical neuroscience, epilepsy research, computational modeling and bioengineering. Covers a wide range of topics from molecular to seizure predictions and brain implants to control seizures Contributors are top experts at the forefront of computational epilepsy research Chapter contents are highly relevant to both basic and clinical epilepsy researchers

Download Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Clinical practice related to sleep problems and sleep disorders has been expanding rapidly in the last few years, but scientific research is not keeping pace. Sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome are three examples of very common disorders for which we have little biological information. This new book cuts across a variety of medical disciplines such as neurology, pulmonology, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, psychology, otolaryngology, and nursing, as well as other medical practices with an interest in the management of sleep pathology. This area of research is not limited to very young and old patientsâ€"sleep disorders reach across all ages and ethnicities. Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation presents a structured analysis that explores the following: Improving awareness among the general public and health care professionals. Increasing investment in interdisciplinary somnology and sleep medicine research training and mentoring activities. Validating and developing new and existing technologies for diagnosis and treatment. This book will be of interest to those looking to learn more about the enormous public health burden of sleep disorders and sleep deprivation and the strikingly limited capacity of the health care enterprise to identify and treat the majority of individuals suffering from sleep problems.
