A field Investigation will be conducted at IRP Sites No. 7 (Dry Well off Corrosion Control Building) and No. 8 (Dry Well off Composite Maintenance Building), Montana Air National Guard, Great Falls International Airport, Great Falls, Montana. The Remedial Investigation (RI), completed in May 1997, recommended that an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis be performed at Sites 7 and 8 to determine the significance of the groundwater contamination, and what remedial measures, if any, should be taken. The field investigation will consist of installing four (4) monitoring wells at each site, collecting and analyzing groundwater from each well, and measuring hydraulic properties of the groundwater. The objectives of this investigation will be to assess the extent of groundwater contamination, to determine the potential risk of the contamination to human health and the environment, and to evaluate removal action alternatives.

A Remedial Investigation was conducted at the Great Falls Air National Guard Base during April, May, and July 1996. During the period four IRP sites were investigated (IRP Sites 1, 6, 7, and 8). The investigation consisted of drilling 14 soil borings and installing 10 monitoring wells. At Sites 1 and 6, no contaminants in the soil or groundwater were found above State and Federal cleanup levels; and a Decision Document to support no further action is recommended. At Sites 7 and 8, no contaminants were found in the soil above State and Federal cleanup levels; and a Decision Document to support no further action with respect to soil contamination is recommended. At Sites 7 and 8, groundwater contamination above State and Federal cleanup levels was detected. The contamination included petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, and dissolved metals. It is recommended that an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis be prepared to evaluate remedial alternatives for the groundwater at Sites 7 and 8.

The Installation Restoration Program was initiated by the Air National Guard (ANG) to evaluate potential contamination to the environment caused by past practices at its installations. Two sites were identified at Capital Municipal Airport during the 1990 Preliminary Assessment; the Petroleum, Oils and Lubricants Storage Area (Site 1) and the Old Fire Training Area (Site 2). Information gathered during a 1996 Site Investigation on both sites and 1995 Site Investigation Addendum for Site 2 did not provide adequate information for decision-making. This Field Investigation was designed to fill data gaps. The Tech Memo recommends Site 1 proceed to a No Further Action Decision Document, and Site 2 proceed to an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA). No further field effort is necessary to complete the EE/CA. Vol 1 contains the main text of the report. Vol 2 contains the supporting data.

This report presents the results from a Remedial Investigation (RI) for two sites at the Utah Air National Guard (UANG) Base located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation (Stone & Webster) performed the work for the Air National Guard (ANG) Readiness Center under Task No. 2 of Contract No. DAHA9O-94-D-0009. The two sites investigated are identified as Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Site 8, a former underground storage tank (UST) location, and IRP Site 10, an existing petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) yard. The RI was conducted as outlined in the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) Work Plan prepared by Stone & Webster and submitted to and approved by the ANG in May 1993. The field work associated with the RI was performed in June, July, and August 1995.
