Excerpt from Influence of Ownership on Forestry in Small Woodlands in Central Wisconsin The following paragraphs present, in condensed form, the results of 180 interviews With small private forest landowners in central Wisconsin during 1958. Farmers and part-time farmers (most of them dairy farmers) form the largest occupation group of small forest landowners in central Wisconsin (61 percent). Wage earners follow With 26 percent. About 84 per cent of the owners are over 40 years of age, 89 percent live Within 10 miles of their forest land, and a large proportion (63 percent) have owned their forest land at least 10 years. Most of the woodland holdings are less than 50 acres in size. Timber growing was Cited by half the owners as being the primary use of forest land. Grazing is the primary forest use of 27 percent of the owners, and other uses such as recreation and residence make up the remainder. Grazing of forest lands is prevalent. Some 58 percent of all owners used their forest lands to some extent for this purpose; however, 23 percent were grazing only lightly. Some 66 percent of all owners and 85 percent of the farmers con51der timber products for home use important.
