Excerpt from Indian Home Rule The doctrine of violence is more widely believed in than is generally realised. The votaries of violence can be divided into two classes. Some, a small and dwindling class, believe in it and are prepared to act according to their faith. Others, a very large class always, and now, after bitter experiences of the failure of constitutional agitation, larger than ever, believe in violence, but that belief does not lead them to action. It disables them from work on any basis other than force. The belief in violence serves to dissuade them from all other kinds of work or sacrifice. In both cases the evil is great. There can be no reconstruction or hope for this land of ours, unless we eradicate the worship of force in all its forms, and establish work on a basis other than violence. A refutation of the doctrine of violence is, in the present situation of the affairs of our country, more necessary than ever. To this end, nothing better can be conceived than the publication and wide distribution of Mr. Gandhi's famous book. It was extremely patriotic of Messrs. Ganesh and Company to have readily agreed to undertake the work when they were approached with the request. Excerpt from India's Claim for Home Rule Ture and party denominations vary almost without an intelligible explanation therefor, while political facts may remain the same. When Mrs. Besant took to Indian politics, she saw that Self-government within the Empire, or Colonial Self-government as a poli tical party word was too cumbrous and without sufficient. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Indian Home Rule: Look inside the book: We are still twisting our limbs and still restless, and just as the state between sleep and awakening must be considered to be necessary, so may the present unrest in India be considered a necessary and, therefore, a proper state. ...If the education we have received be of any use, if the works of Spencer, Mill and others be of any importance and if the English Parliament be the mother of Parliaments, I certainly think that we should copy the English people and this to such an extent that, just as they do not allow others to obtain a footing in their country, so we should not allow them or others to obtain it in ours. ...Editor: I have merely given you my opinion on the religious aspect, but when I give you my views as to the poverty of India you will perhaps begin to dislike me, because what you and I have hitherto considered beneficial for India no longer appears to me to be so.

Indian Home Rule By M. K. Gandhi The only part of the programme which is now being carried out in its entirety is that of non-violence. But I regret to have to confess that even that is not being carried out in the spirit of the book. If it were, India would establish Swaraj in a day. If India adopted the doctrine of love as an active part of her religion and introduced it in her politics, Swaraj would descend upon India from heaven. But I am painfully aware that that event is far off as yet. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience

Excerpt from British Rule in India: With a Plea for Home Rule or Self-Government The Hon. Mr. M. A. Jinnah, president of the all-k India Moslem League, held at Lucknow during Christ mas, 1915, said on self-government for India: Leav I ing aside hairbrained twaddle of the tribe of scientific i peddlers who love to sit in judgment on the East and ape political philosophy, no man with the least pre tensions to common sense can affect to maintain that the Indian humanity is 'stamped with a ruthless psychol ogy and cramped for ever within the prison of its skull. If the Indians are not the pariahs of Nature, if they are not out of the. Pale or operations of the laws that gov em mankind elsewhere, if their minds can grow in' knowledge and power and think and plan and organize together for common needs of the present and for com mon hopes of the future, then the only future for them is self-government, i. E., the attainment of the power to apply, through properly organized channels, the common national will and intelligence to the needs and tasks of their national existence. The cant of unfit ness must die. The laws of Nature and the doctrines of common humanity are not'different in the East.
