Excerpt from An Ideal Republic: Or Way Out of the Fog In resorting to romance to illustrate facts the writer has only followed in the footsteps of many prominent authors, and it will be remembered that even the wise and religious teachings of the lowly Nazarene were principally allegorical. It has been said that God worketh all things accord ing to His own good pleasure, and it would now seemto an observing mind that evolution is the principle through which He worketh to the end that all may steadily, progress both intellectually and spiritually toward better conditions. Excerpt from The Negro in America, and the Ideal American Republic Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, was elected president of the United States. Many of the prominent politicians of the South professed to see in his election an act of hostility to slavery and an encroachment upon the rights of the Southern people, and they finally in duced a large number of the States to try to secede from the Union and form a confederate government. The fundamental principle of the secession movement was the doctrine of State rights: that every State of the Union had the right to secede whenever the people thought it best for their own interest. Excerpt from The Republic of Plato: An Ideal Commonwealth The question arises whether Plato intended his ideal state to be a Cloudcuckootown or Utopia of theory, or wished to establish it in actuality. Plato himself says that though difficult of creation, such a state would be by no means im possible, could any place be found suitable for the habitation of philosophers and the growth of philosophy: and this place, he says, would be found if some monarch should apply himself to practical philosophy and find his people willing to obey. It seems beyond doubt that Plato had hopes of founding such a state in Syracuse, with the aid of his friend and pupil, Dion, the brother-in-law of Dionysius the younger, the tyrant of Syracuse. But though Dionysius for a time was glad of Plato's teaching. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In this work, Alexander Rosenthal Pubul presents a broad examination of the ancient philosophical question: “What is the good life?”, while addressing how the liberal arts can help us to answer this question. Greek philosophy distinguished between the “noble” (what is good in itself), from the merely “useful” (good for something else). From thence follows the distinction between the liberal arts which pursue such noble goods and the mechanical arts which are only instrumental. For Aristotle, the most noble and excellent good is wisdom itself. Hence the theoretic life devoted to the love of wisdom for its own sake –philosophy - is the highest and the most excellent. This work theorizes the origins of modernity in a rebellion against this Greek conception resulting in a complete inversion of the classical hierarchy. Sir. Francis Bacon reconceiving the purpose of knowledge as power, enthroned technology over philosophy and the liberal arts. The unfolding of the modern Baconian revolution progressively sidelines the liberal arts, as practical economic and technical utility become the standard of value. In assessing this problem, the book engages in a capacious journey across disciplines like philosophy, history, art, politics, and science. It is also a veritable tour across the Western intellectual tradition including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Seneca, Thomas Aquinas, Bacon, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Nietzsche, Dewey, Berdyaev, Einstein, and Heidegger. It pleads the urgent need to preserve the humanizing cultural ideals of the ancient classics against the modern tyranny of utility and the dangers of a new barbarism.

Excerpt from The New America: A Study of the Imperial Republic Ten years ago the republic was split up into sections of opinion, each having little sympathy with the other; now the solid South is shattered; State rights are fast dwindling into the rights possessed by English counties, or at most, Crown Colonies; a standing army of men has arisen, and a great fleet and mercantile marine are materializing. Briefly, it may be said that the States have been a century in labour, and have put forth a nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
