Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Excerpt from German Classics, Vol. 10 IN editing the present volume, which is the tent/z of my Series of German Classics, I have, in general, adhered to the principle I adopted in the beginning; that is, to interpret the classical writings of Germany - to the best Of my ability - in the manner in which Greek and Latin Classics have been annotated for the use Of English students. The favourable reception which has been ac corded to my editions by my colleagues in Great Britain and in other countries amply justifies my proceeding, and relieves me from the task of dilating on the desir ability, nay necessity, of a thorough interpretation of the modern German Classics. It is now universally conceded that it is only by a careful study of them that German can become both a moral and an intellectual medium for the training Of the mind. At the same time it cannot be denied that, German being a living, and, so to say, a constantly growing language, the study of it has also a purely practical function. Bearing in mind these facts, I have endeavoured to annotate Schiller's jungfrau won Orleans from a literary as well as from a practical point Of view; so that my edition may be of interest to the scholar and serve as a guide to the student Of German as a spoken language. I have, therefore, explained all allu sions to authentic or legendary history, and I have also pointed out the instances in which Schiller deviated from history and from tradition. This process has enabled me to vindicate the poet indirectly against some charges brought forward by certain critics, who were unaware of all the sources at his command, and to what extent he considered it. Expedient to use them. I have said that my vindication was indirect. It is so because I have confined myself to giving my own explanations, and have abstained from entering into personal controversies, which would have been unsuitable to a book like the present. Excerpt from The German Classics of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, Vol. 19 of 20: Masterpieces of German Literature, Translated Into English Is this still the people to which Goethe belonged? At a time when a common cause with Austria conjures up again the shade Of the dear Old Holy Roman Empire no other verse in Faust seems SO inept as that concerning the ugly political song. Today we should rather say An unpolitical song, an ugly song; for to the people that but a few weeks ago was mindful Of naught but works Of peace everything has become a matter of indifference except the burning question Of the hour. Even though the longed-for peace Should soon return, the year 1914 must leave a deep mark in the development Of German literature. As yet we can only look back, not forward, from this milestone; and even in so doing we cannot escape from the present. Excerpt from The German Classics of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, Vol. 12 of 20: Masterpieces of German Literature, Translated Into English As a novelist Freytag is Often compared with Charles Dickens, largely on account of the humor that so frequently breaks forth from his pages. It is a different kind Of humor, not so obstreperous, not so exaggerated, but it helps to lighten the whole in much the same way. One moment it is an incongruous simile, at another a bit of sly satire; now infinitely small things are spoken of as though they were great, and again we have the reverse. Excerpt from The German Classics of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, Vol. 15 of 20: Masterpieces of German Literature Translated Into English It is a particular satisfaction that the gracious permis sion of His Majesty the German Emperor made it possible to link him here, through selections from his speeches dealing with religion, social reform, art, education, and Sport, with those other three intellectual leaders Of con temporary Germany; and the Editors and Publishers of the german classics desire, in this place also, to express their Sincere gratitude for the favor bestowed upon them.
