Two brothers, two fates, a turbulent time. In the 20th century, Alfred and Ernst Hofer are drawn from the tranquil Emmental to faraway places. But in the turmoil of the Russian Revolution, Alfred is forced to flee in a hurry and soon settles in France. The merchant Ernst ended up in Italy and Paris, but the First World War forced him to serve as an infantry corporal at the front. The Great Depression also brought setbacks, but Ernst did not give up. The two eyewitness accounts allow us to share in the extraordinary lives of two brothers in a time of upheaval, in which they courageously fought for their survival.
