Hence, to approach this perfection in any respect, will make a valuable book, and one whose lessons will remain perpetually to the coming generations. A history of a people must, therefore, carefully consider the race, the epoch, and the climate and soil and their combined effects in elucidating the causes, after the facts have been collated. Where the period of time covered by the story is short - only a little more than a generation as in the history of this valley, the effects flowing out from these causes become shadowy and indistinct - more difficult to trace out and fix clearly to the view, in due ratio to the brevity of the period which comes within the purview of the writer.
